i have just finsihed my new build and i think that my 3dbechmark is really low for my specs. let me know if i am wrong.

http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=4976256

my old box i was running i scored an 8321 and that was a p4 1.4ghz instead of my 2.53ghz and only 384mb ram instead of my 512 that i have now.

and i used the same card for both machines.

That's not low at all. That's actually pretty good for a Gf4 ti4200 with a P4 2.53 ghz.

can the fact that i have directx 9 instead of 8.1 effecting my score at all do you think?

Maybe. Download DX9 and see if it makes a difference. You can also set the Frame Buffer to Triple. That will give you about a 20 point increase. And have you played around at all with the DRAM timings in the BIOS? Setting them lower (faster) will increase your score, but that's overclocking so it can affect your stability. Though, your score is pretty good for your system. My best score (overclocked) is only slightly better than your score not overclocked:

ok i got 2 questions

1) is how come some people only run about half of the tests? do that last few drop your score or what?

2) how would i OC my videocard?

RenegadeKing

I only run the first 4 game tests because 1) it's quicker and 2) it seems I get the same if not better score by just running the game tests.

To overclock your graphics card download this registry entry here: http://www.guru3d.com/files/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=462

It adds new tabs to your graphics card properties page. One of them is Clock Frequencies. There you can raise or llower the core and memory speeds for your card.

Go to d3d settings and set the mipmap detail level to best performance. Make sure you do not have any aa or af filtering enabled. Make sure nothing is running while benching, network, av, etc. If you have a 4109 or 4201 driver (wich I recommend if running dx9, they are dx9 drivers) set the slider to aggressive in video properties. Try again and let us know.

blakhart where do i download the 4109 or 4201 drivers? also how do i get into the d3d settings.

sry for sounding like a noob.

You can download all the latest Detonator drivers here: http://www.guru3d.com/files/pafiledb.php?action=category&id=10

You can get to the D3D settings by going into Display Properties, in the settings tab click Advanced. Click the GeForce4 tab. There on the left are all your graphics card settings sections.

umm. RenegadeKing i downloaded that file and added it to the regestry but it didnt do anything.

also for some reason when i run the newest drivers from www.nvidia.com my benchmark score si in the 8000's and when i use the older drivers (came when i bought the Videocard) i score in the 9000's why is this?

RenegadeKing
01-12-2003, 11:42 PM
Woh, you are getting 9000? In your compare link it says you are getting 12676. As for that registry tweak, you will see it adds a new tab called "Clock Frequencies" in the GeForce4 tab in advanced or display properties. There you can overclock your card.

-thats the problem. i dont have a geforce 4 ti4200 tab.

lol. i dont know why its not there. i have a tab for it on my old machine but not on this new build

and my score is the score in the 9000's its comapred to another system with same specs but better score.

ok im downloading the Detonator 42.01 but i had this before and it lowered my benchmark score so i went back to my old drivers. but ill try it again

RenegadeKing
01-12-2003, 11:59 PM
ooooohhhh. i see. alright. In that case, that is a fairly low score. Well after you download the 42.01 drivers check to see if the tab is there. It really should be. Then check to see if the clock frequencies tab is there. If it isn't run the registry tweak again. Reboot after you run it before checking to see if the tab is there. Whenever I check to see if the tab is there before rebooting after running the tweak, it always gets messed up and I have to reinstall the drivers.

ok now i have a geforce tab. let me try from here

ok i have the tweak and i see the clock speeds and the slider and all.. ill mess around with it and see what i can do.

also is there any certian temp i should watch for with the GPU? or is it just when it becomes unstable?

Bushtree
01-13-2003, 12:11 AM
ok my old score was 9212

then i adjusted the slider to agressive and changed the mipmap detail level to best performance then ran benchmark again and my new score is

8059 so it droped over 1000points but thats because of the 40.21 drivers. when i install my old drviers it goes back up 1000 points why is that?

Can you check your GPU temps? I checked mine once and it was 55C I think that's pretty high, but whatever. Everything works fine and I can still overclock it pretty high. Anyway, I'm not sure what the acceptable temp range is for a Gf4, so just up the sliders little by little until it becomes unstable or you start to see weird colors or other artifacts on the screen. Then lower them a bit until it's stable. I wouldn't leave your gfx card OCed to the max all the time though. I don;t think it's worth the shortened life of the chip.

ok im uping the clocks and then benching the uping more. ect..

is that how i should be doing this..

ok now i am clocked to 285/353 and my score droped again this time to 7962.. whats going on?

Bushtree
01-13-2003, 12:52 AM
ok i OC'ed it pretty high only to not even get back to the score with my old drivers. so im gonna switch bck to them.

i OC'ed to

310/600 and only got 8212

RenegadeKing
01-13-2003, 08:29 AM
Odd. Very odd. I'm not sure what's going on. Yes, I would go back to the old drivers. See what that does for you.

im back to the old drivers now and im scoring in the low 9000's

about 9012-9212

but theres no way to OC with my old drivers?

RenegadeKing
01-13-2003, 07:27 PM
You should be able to. The gf4 tab really isn't there?

Bushtree
01-13-2003, 10:30 PM
ok using my bundled drivers. 29.xx (im not sure they are a 29. somthing)

i benched @ 9,208

then i OC'ed my video card and

then i benched 10,162 (300/599)

that is the best that i am going ot get out of this card i think..

let me know what you think.

also i OC'ed my video card with a program called RivaTuner

RenegadeKing

Try the 31.80s. http://www.guru3d.com/files/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=524
Also, check all your BIOS settings for things like AGP fastwrites, 4x speed, etc. Make sure all those little tweaks are on and set fast.

10K out of a 4200 with a 2.53 is decent, that's all I got out of the last 2.53 I built with a 4400 stock clocking with 28.32 drivers on 98SE.

Bushtree
01-13-2003, 10:53 PM
umm. ok ill check my BIOS..

in my BIOS there are a few thing i dont know.

like

AGP/PCI Frequency: what should i set that to? or just leave it alone?

VIDEO MEMORY CACHE MODE: its not on UC but the other option is USWC

what are these?

RenegadeKing
01-13-2003, 10:55 PM
10k is pretty good, but you are getting it with overclocking. If you got the 40s working right your score should increase 1000 not decrease. Oh well, that score is probably pretty accurate for those drivers and hardware.

Bushtree
01-13-2003, 11:29 PM
when i run the 40 for some odd reason the score decreases by 1000. and that is when i run any of the new drivers that i have tried. strang ha?

i dont know why

its a verto ti4200 if you were wondering made by PNY

Blakhart
01-14-2003, 12:45 AM
This is very odd indeed, as I ran dx9, the 4201 driver, and at defaults got 10400 or thereabouts, fastest yet for this xp1800/4200. I am now running 4072 as this driver has better image quality than the 4201 or the 4109. Keep at it as there must be some reason it is doing this.

Bushtree
01-14-2003, 01:14 AM
yes. i agree that there is some reason but i cant seem to figure it out. and nowone here has any idea so im kinda stuck.
