I have got
K7S5A Elite Mainboard
128 RAM
Rive TNT2 Graphics Card
40gig Hard Drive
I have been using my computer for about 8-9 months without any problems. Then suddenly I got the LoveLetter virus. I removed it but then I was getting a message saying windows\system32\config\system file missing or corrupted.
So I re-formatted my Hard Drive but I still seem to get this message.
Could I have picked this virus up again. Or do you know if there is another reason why.
Could it have damaged my hard drive.
Can anyone help
Thanks
Julian

Go to Trendmicro.com and use their free online scanner to eliminate the virus. Reformatting the hard drive will not always remove the virus, as files are able to be recovered.

Is that correct... that a format will not get rid of a virus??I have a funky problem that sounds like a virus, but Norton did not see. I
reformatted and still have the problem, but I ruled out the virus. Can a virus survive a reformat? Thanks.

i think you have to fdisk first and then format, thats why i was asking to check the removal instructions see if anything was on there
Depends on what the virus is - you may have to zero out the drive to get rid of it.

How do you zero out the drive.
Download the free utilities from the hard drive manufacturer. Note that this will delete EVERYTHING and leave you with a totally blank drive.

procedure check:
I was helping a friend with his problem. His Gateway computer is acting funny. He said he had Norton a/v installed, but his computer is 3 years old, and all he had was the 6 months trial software, and he thought he was protected. After running new Norton a/v and finding no virus, I ended up reformatting and loading his restore disk. Still weird. The restore disk never asked for the Win 98 product code. After install, the printer driver would not load, and said there was a problem with Windows.. to re-install. I did that. Still problems. I thought that since we did the reformat, and scanned the HD, that the probable explanation was a bad restore disk .(he had never used it).
Now it sounds like two years without a/v program might be a better explanation. Question: if I zero out the HD, will he still be able to use the restore disk, or will that remove the partition on the HD that Gateway probably puts on to enable their programs. What think?
Zeroing out the drive will remove all partitions. However, the restore disk should see that there are no partitions and create one, Gateway doesn't use a proprietary diagnostic partition like Compaq.
