Hello, all-
I'm looking for a 19" CRT flat screen monitor that will look good with an Antec metallic gray case. I was looking at the Dell P992 aperture grill type (not to be confused with the M992 which is the shadow mask). The specs look good but I can find almost no info about it (except on the Dell web site). Can someone recommend a black/grey 19" CRT from EXPERIENCE? Also, any ideas why this monitor has been out a year and there are no reviews for it on the 'net?
Thanks in advance.
PS- Is the aperture grill phenomenon really that noticiable/annoying?

Both Samsung and Viewsonic make a great monitor with the specs you want for less money.
And the only time that you will notice the grill is with an all white background, otherwise it's not visable. And even when it is, on the white background, is is just slightly darker.
Checkout newegg.com to see the pictures of the monitors.

The aperture grille phenomenon is in true life only noticeable if you go looking for it.
I am writing this on a white background and the line is just below what I am writing.
To describe it, think of the finest line you can imagine that is perceivable on a monitor screen.
Now if you dont go looking for this type of line, then you wont see it will you :):)
It is really not a problem worth bothering about.
Is that the two lines that a lot of trinitrons have?

Yes trinitron monitors are aperture grille monitors made by Sony
Trinitron monitors (being an aperture grille monitor) have 2 fine lines horizontally across the screen which are only barely perceptible even on a white background.
I have 2 aperture grille monitors both, 17 inches. Aperture grille monitors tend to be brighter than shadow mask monitors.
I prefer aperture grilles because they are extremely clear with good colour and brightness.
My personal opinion is that they are the best CRTs you can buy.
Viewsonic (and I have had a few) make very good shadow mask monitors but I still think the Sony monitors with Trinitron are slightly better. The clarity of the displays is simply great.
Thats my opinion.

Thanks for the responses.
After more reading (and a trip to COMPUSA to do some visual comparisons), I've narrowed it down to the ViewSonic G90fb and the A90f+ UltraBrite. I know I was looking at aperture grilles before, but the UltraBrite was on display vs. some Sony Trinitrons, and, with the UltraBrite kicked in, it blew them away on the Video/Gaming demos and costs about $100 less. The G90fb wasn't there, but it has higher resolutions per refresh rate (G90fb: 1600x1200 @ 77Hz; A90f+: 1600x1200 @ 68Hz). Is this enough to matter? I would rather buy a monitor I'd seen in action, but I'd also rather get the better monitor and have to adjust the controls manually (UltraBrite raises the contrast and brightness for games w/ one touch).

The A90f+ UltraBrite CRT for impressive graphics and video seems to be the monitor of choise. If you were impressed with the monitor on display A90f+ UltraBrite CRT then thats the one i would get....
In my opinion nobody makes better aperature grill monitors than Sony. Second would be Mitsubishi and they use Sony parts.

I ended up getting the G90fb, and it ROCKS! It's huge. Color is very good, and it does good refreshes at hi-res (I'm running 85.9Hz at 1024x768, It'll do 75.6Hz at 1600x1200). The web says it has a .27mm diagonal dot pitch, but the user guide says .25mm. Another thing the web is wrong about is the 18in depth. It's really 20 from front to back. This monitor is great. And huge. I love playing UT2003 on this thing. After you're done, it makes real life seem 2D. :) Hell, even The Sims is more fun on a huge monitor. I got it for $205 (+$41s&h) from techonweb.com. Ordered Thursday and rec'd Monday. Awesome.

i have MAG 17" at 85hz at 1024x768... thats the best it can do!
100hz at 1024x768 is very nice :).
Even cheap monitors these days can support high refresh rates - my $150 CTX PL-9 (19") supports 100 Hz at 1024x768 and 85 Hz at 1280x1024. It will even do 1600x1200 at 75 Hz.
