Have I messed up?

On my Win98 se machine I upgraded to Windows Media player 9.0 and ever since when I try to play streaming media I get an error that says that windows media player cannot play the file. The file is either corrupt or the Player does not support the format you are trying to play. When I click on the error box's "more information" button I get the following error code.
0xC00D1199: Cannot play the file. Have I corrupted the registry, or what? I did this awhile back and have gone longer than I can scanreg /restore to. Any solutions? I have tried uninstalling WMP and redownloading and installing to no avail. Help!

I took a quick look over at the MSKB, and on Google, and was quickly impressed by the avalanche of information - it buried me fairly well.

I don't use Windows Media Player much, but I seem to remember that the newer versions need a third-party plug in to be able to play certain formats (even though earlier versions supported such playback)

But, by golly, I'll have to look around some more in the morning to see if my memory is anywhere near on track on this one = I was spending most of my time trying to get the search hits down under 40,000 :)

[I suppose you could "downgrade" to a previous version just to see if you get the functions you want back without much fuss]

I have heard rumours that UDP is not well implemented in WMP 9. Try disabling this in Tools | Options | Network.

I've been having the same problems with WMP 9.0 and I believe it's a codec issue.
Whenever I try to play any MP3's or AVI's I notice WMP tries to download a codec and fails, gives me the same error.
I wasn't able to find much info on it but I didn't bother anyway, DL WinAmp - I've never had any problems with it.
My two cents but what do I know :cool:

My router wouldn't be blocking anything would it? Could WMP 9.0 be trying to use ports that the router has blocked?

Linksys BEFSR41. Click a link in the media guide. Videos that are graphic links. You would think I should be able to but nuthin works except Radio stations.

I tried a quick look over at Linksys earlier today, and on my 1st glance only saw an interesting Linksys Knowledge Base for RealOne streaming problems: it had to do with the setup in IE for the router - included things in that Setup for Forwarding and "Port Triggering". Perhaps if RealOne can have a problem, WMP9 might also.

A few other things that are fairly painless to try: perhaps see if re-creating your media library file helps [the article is a fix for a different problem with audio CDs, but I figure - can't hurt!]

You can also try a manual download of the version 9 codecs, in case something went wrong on the 1st couple of tries - at least when you're doing it manually, if something goes wrong, you might be able to get an error message that will help figure what's wrong:

Did everything work before with an earlier version of Media Player? [luckily, version 9 will uninstall from Win98 . . . you have to use "System Restore" for WinXP]

Anyone out there who has any clues, please jump in.

I keep getting the suspicion that this probably has happened to a lot of folks, but I just haven't found the right search combination to find the cure

Ok, found some more stuff - figured I'd add it in another reply, rather than make that last post even more unreadable than it already is.

Got a hold of the ReadMe for the player. Two issues jumped out: 1) one for Netscape users and 2) a warning that certain websites/webpages might not work with ver.9:

1) Using Netscape Navigator as the default browser

Configuring proxy settings
If you configure Netscape Navigator to be the default Internet browser, the stand-alone version of Windows Media Player 9 Series uses the proxy settings specified in Netscape. However, if you view content that is embedded in a Web page, the proxy settings specified in the Internet Options Control Panel item are used instead.

Using Media Guide with Netscape Navigator 7.0
If your Internet connection requires a proxy server, and you download and install Netscape Navigator 7.0 and then configure it to be your default browser, the Media Guide feature is not displayed and the Player is unable to receive streamed content. To resolve this issue, download the offline full Netscape installation package, and then install the software without specifying an explicit proxy server.

Digital rights management (DRM) not supported
Digital rights management (DRM) is not supported by Netscape Navigator versions 6.x or 7.0. This means, for example, that if Netscape Navigator 6.x or 7.0 is your default Internet browser, it may not be able to acquire a license to play protected content.

Yeah well, GaryRouth, I got an old Diamond Viper II TNT2 2X AGP card and as far as I know nobody is making any new drivers for this tired but reliable vid card. And as far as uninstalling and reinstalling that older version where everything DID work; I can uninstall alright, but the 7.1 version for Win98 is unavailable to download in the US now! Ain't that a crock-o-****!:mad:

[by the way, I've got some of those trusty old nVidia cards, too: if your Diamond was a Riva 128, you'd be out of luck: but I think the TNT2 is the first model that can use the Detonator unified drivers . . . you could probably play with a reference driver if you want to - I've got the Diamond Riva 128, so I don't get to do that]

If I heard correctly on a ScreenSavers show yesterday, the Detonator installer will recognize which card you have going back thru the TNT's. Maybe there is more info at their www.techtv.com site...
