This is going to sound like a completely noobie question here, but I can't remember if an 8x slot is compatible with the older 4x cards. I know that the agp 3 works off a 1.5v and the older 4x,2x and 1x work off of 3.3, but will it work? My gut instinct says no, but I do not know 100%. :(

Please forgive me; I'm currently rasslin with food poisoning.

Hi WWD,

I've got something wrote down here that says 8x is compatible with 4x but no lower (2x or 1x). So unless there are too different standards of 4x cards, I'd say yes. Anybody else wanta jump in here and validate or dispute this? Please do.

From what I'm reading, it seems they would be compatible, but I don't want to make a mistake.

I believe juppy is right. There is a voltage difference, and the 8X and 4X are the same.

You can use an 8X card in a 4X slot.

So I can safely put my agp 2.0 card which is 4x into a agp 3.0 8x?

Yes

I'm not really dense, guys. I just want to be careful on this, because I'm on a budget and can't afford to lose another motherboard. This would be three. I have built over 35 computers in the last year and the last two motherboards are the only problems I have ever had with motherboards.:(

But wont it operate at only the 4X level if you use it in a 4X slot?

It works. I was just over-cautious.

easyco: Correct - and you will not notice the difference.

I 've been unclear. I was unsure whether or not this ti200 is a 3.3 v or 1.5v. I was worried whether or not it would be safe. however, it has worked perfectly since I put it in. Thanks guys. :)
