help with modem problem

I have an old Toshiba Tecra 8000 notebook that originally came with win95. I have upgraded the OS to win98SE and now the internal modem is not detected by the system. I called the Toshiba technical service and they recommended several things including installing a new modem driver for win 98, upgrading the BIOS and trying another internal modem driver.

None of the above worked. I also can not install a pcmcia modem driver either. Can anyone help?

Does it show up at all in the device manager as unknown device or something with the red exclamation point or yellow question mark??

device manager doesn't show modem at all.

Would almost seem like it somehow got disabled in the BIOS then. I would poke around that BIOS and see what I could see!

I just gave an old Tecra to my 3 year old neice for Christmas :)
The fun thing about working with the oldies is that you "have no fear" when it comes to trying different fixes (not much to lose)

You could try this:
1) Reboot - while rebooting, press the key that lets you enter Bios Setup [just like ktkendall recommends] Look through every menu for an onboard modem - Many are Nested! you sometimes have to jump through hoops to find them. Probably is in a expandable menu called Onboard Devices, or Peripherals. Make sure it says "Enabled"
2) Boot to safe mode
3) Remove your com ports
4) Reboot - Let the computer re-detect the com ports
(might need your Win98 disk, or point to the .Cab files)
5) If the modem wasn't detected along with the com ports: Run the Modem Wizard in the Control Panel
(double click on the modem icon in Control Panel)

This will work best if your install of Win98se was a clean install. If you did an inplace upgrade, try running a Registry Cleaner - just to get rid of troublesome leftovers (MS's RegClean works well and any changes can be undone. Create a directory in your C: drive, call it something easy to remember like "Registry Cleaner". Download the file, extract it to that directory & read the ReadMe file. You run the program from that folder by double-clicking in regclean.exe in Windows Explorer. It creates an undo file in the folder you run it from. As far as the Pc cards not working, that's generally handled by 3rd party software. See if you have the floppies for the original Win95 install & check for the vendor - then see if they still have a website with a Win98 version of the pc-card software. Toshiba might/might not have a version somewhere on their site.
