Whenever I download and install a proggie it strongly recommends that I close any other apps prior to installing.

In the practice I keep running Trillian, several IE windows, OE and the AV program. Am I inviting troubles by doing it?

What are your experiences about the matter?

BTW I'm running WinXP Pro. Altho I have done the same thing in W98FE.

You are supposed to close other programs because they might be using a DLL or other shared resource that needs to be updated by the installing program.

In practice, I have never come across a problem with it.

I not actively running any programs but I don't close my AV or other programs in the systems tray either.
I guess I'll get caught someday but till then.....

Because of my blind trust of Windows, I guess that is another task I will quit worrying about.

I close everything. Probably don't need to, but I always think if it doesn't work and I didn't follow the directions should I expect it to?

I leave everything running, install the program and so far I have not had a problem.

I don't know with AVG, With NAV simply right click the icon in the systray and select "disable auto-protect". I'm sure AVG would have something similar.

When I used AV, I just meant anti-virus. I really meant NAV or Norton anti-virus....Didn't even know about AVG.
