IE6: "always ask before opening this type of file" Problem

y0 all,

Today I was crusin themexp.org looking for a good loginpage and the next thing I know is when I go to download a .zip file (winzip archive) it dose not ask me do I want it to download the file it just goes ahead and downloads it then executes it, I've been searching goolge but it really didn't point to an answer so I'm asking you guys, from what I hear though, I may have to go into the registry to fix this because this specific setting for zip files is not in the settings of IE or winzip. And one thing to note is that this is the only file type effected like this, it asks on all the other types.

Please help me before I download something mallicious on accident and its too late :(

Download winrar and have it associate with zip files. See if that fixes it. Winrar is a better program than winzip anyway IMO.

i know but ur suggestions won't help the problem is with IE not winzip, you where sooooo off track witht that first reply that I didn't even want ot get into it.

But how do you know if you haven't been able to find any information on it? I would bet that another browser would fix it. Maybe not another zip program. (Personally I would still try it, because resetting the .zip association may change what IE does)

Have you tried reinstalling IE?

I have WinXP Pro and Win 98se both with IE6 and have never seen that problem before. I have winzip 8.0 on both machine's as well. Check your setting's in Winzip your problem is in there...

anthor browser is not what I want. I want IE, or else I would not have been using it in the first place.
I have not been able to find information on my specific problem, but thats typical so...

you and I both know how dependend windows is on IE, un-installing IE is not feasble because it cannot be "reinstalled" that requires it to be uninstalled first then installed again, which cannot be done because there is on un-installer for IE and just deleting it would not fix the problem which lies in the registry.

Also, I don't need to get anthor zip program to reset the association because 1.) winzip is already properly associated with zip files and 2.) I can reset the associations a number of ways WITHOUT anthor program.

the problem is not within winzip, because winzip was never given the feature to disable prompts when downloading zip files, therefore winzip could not have changed the options/settings in IE.

The problem is that I unchecked the box which is in the prompt window which dose not come up anymore because the box is not checked. Think about it for a minute, really hard, till you realise the only way to fix this is to find a program that specializes in fixing such problems or to go into the registry and fix it by hand.

Well try that. I would assume it would fix your problem. And I never said anything about there being an uninstaller ;)

Before you go re-installing you might try this. I don't know what OS you're using but you need to find the File Types list. I'm still using Win95 and for that OS you right click the Start button and click on Explorer (not Internet Explorer, the other one you use to search through files on your machine). From there go to the View menu and in there click Options. There should be a File Types tab. Click that and scroll down until you find the file type called WinZip file. Click that once to hi-lite it and click Edit. There should be a check box on there that says something about "Confirm Open After Download". Make sure there is a check mark in that box. If not, check it. It should bring up the confirmation box again when you go to download that type of file. Like I said, this is for Win95 but whatever OS you're using should have something close to those settings. hth :)

First of all, I would agree that RK probbably has a good idea since the problem seems to be somewhere within IE.

As I understand your problem - there is no window asking you wether to open or save the file, but instead the file is simply opened?

If that is the case, you can probbably >right-click>save target as

Another idea - try going to >tools>internet options>advanced> and reset the defaults

Juppy - just tired your idea on Win2K, there are a few differences though ;)

1)Open Windows explorer (my computer or any normal folder will work)
2)go to >tools>folder options>file types tab
3)sift through the list and find winzip, click then select advanced(this should bring up the "edit file type" window)
4)In the edit file type window for winzip, there should be a box for confirm open after download which should have a check.
