please could someone advise me?
ill try to keep this short.
i installed a new mainboard (Gigabyte GA-7ZX)and processor Athlon 900, i have a Voodoo 3 pci graphic card. while installing my new Sound Blaster Live 1024 sound card the computer hung and i had to power off/on to restart.
restart went well, several days later however i tried to use a game pad, which incidently is plugged into the gameport on the mainboard, and got the response "Your Gameport or Gameport drivers are not properly configured...". i looked in device manager and under creative misc devices the Creative Gameport Joystick has an exclamation mark on it.
i tried to update the drivers as suggested which caused another crash.
i have moved the card to another slot, another crash.
i would appreciate any advice on how to resolve the problem or if the device is faulty.
thanks in advance. mic

Hi,

you said your mainboard has a gameport ?
So maybe it has on-board sound.
Did you disabled the on-board sound before installing the SBLive! ? You can do that in the bios, but before make sure that you removed all drivers from the onboard sound.
Well, I had some problems with the SBLive!, too, it just didn't make DOS sound correctly. I solved this problem by starting the system only with graphics card and the SBLive!, and then installing the others.
Well, changing slots can be helpful, but it has to be the "right" slot. It has to do with IRQ-sharing and busmaster signals.
Well, first try disabling the onboard sound, then we'll see more.

Bingo - RJ hit the nail on the head. The GA-7ZX has onboard sound and gameport which must be disabled in CMOS. Your 2 gameports and sound devices are fighting for the same resources.

Hi,

are you sure you disabled the onboard sound compeltely ? Your mainboard has a jumper for it, JP9, and it is located on the left, next to the AMR slot (There are three jumpers. The JP9 is on the upper left, and has 3 pins). You have to set the jumper over the pins 2 and 3. When Pins 1 and 2 are connected, the onboard sound is enabled.

In the BIOS itself you have to go to "Integrated Pheripherals". I think the gameport will be disablen when onboard sound is disabled, but I'm not sure.
Well, in this option I meant you can see below "OnBoard Legacy Audio", "Sound Blaster", etc., and then "Game Port(200h-207h)". Set it to disabled if possible.

Hope this helps.
