well my sygate trial ran out.... and I would have to purchase it but I didnt. Is there a free firewall out there kinda like AVG for viruses.. But does one exsist for a firewall? Also is msconfig I disable this thign call "internet connection firewall" Is that a bad thing to do? Because trillian (a program with aim, msn, yahoo, icq, iRC on one interface) wouldnt connect properly but once I disabled it ... it worked fine.. any solutions? thanks!

Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com)
Agnitum Outpost (http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/)
Kerio Personal Firewall (http://www.kerio.com/us/kpf_home.html)

:)

Agnitum's Outpost is grrreat -- unless you're running WinXP [there are some issues with XP.]

If you ARE running XP, then Kerio is your best bet. Be sure & monitor the install with Total Uninstall (http://users.rol.ro/g/gmartau/download/download.html) [it's free!] or similar. Why? Because -- if you change your mind -- firewalls are notoriously hard to uninstall.

I use the Sygate Personal Firewall and I really like it. I also recommend Zone Alarm.

Doesn't XP have it's own firewall built in?

There are TWO directions where bad guys can get into your computer's groin area -- bad stuff coming IN, and bad stuff going OUT. The OUT-stuff is usually programs that already have somehow gotten into your computer & are now "calling home" -- trojans or spyware or worms or crapware.

XP protects you from IN, but not from OUT. You need both. The same is true for routers -- their *firewalls* protect IN only.

By the way, if you're running XP & plan to install a software firewall, be SURE & disable the XP's firewall beforehand.

Competing firewalls do NOT get along with each other.

Hate ZA, try Tiny, a rather nice one. ZA does not like to be uninstalled, kinda like anything from Symantec......thus, I do not care to be told "no"...

I used ZA before, but removed it and replace it with Sygate Personal Firewall. It seems I will stick with it for a while . It is working fine with me.

AHH!! I did have Sygate but now when I try to uninstall it... it reboots my computer immediately and doesnt continue with the process. Then when I boto my computer back up sygate prompt comes up saying it has detected another firewall program... How can I get sygate off my computer? BEcause when I try to uninstall it... it jsut reboots my machine... I have outpost as of now.. and Sygate... how do I get one of them off... ALSO how can I tell if I have spware or what you call "crapware" on my computer? Thanks a lot! Im new at "system security" for my pc as you can tell....

Oh my, you have stepped into the proverbial cow patty-slinging contest of *the battle of the firewalls*

Breaking up the war between 2 powerful firewalls is beyond my skill level. I recommend you take this problem to THE best firewall support forum I know of -- the Outpost forum at...
this location. (http://www.agnitum.com/forum/index.php?s=)

The main gurus there are root, megahertz, david, chrisclu. There isn't a firewall problem that they cannot solve.

As for finding & eradicating spyware & such, THE best program IMHO is Spybot Search & Destroy (http://spybot.safer-networking.de/)

Good news -- it's free!.

Best of Hawaiian luck to ye.
