Cable Modem keeps disconnecting...

When using the net the connection stays alive, but after a period of inactivity, it cuts off...i've checked everything, reinstalled network card drivers, moved the card to another slot thinking an irq issue because it was sharing with the vid and the sound, but no go...I think its with Aldelphia altough they keep telling my buddy taht its something with his software, i think they are full of it...any suggestions clues?

I think it's the cable company. Kinda like ISP, they disconnect you if you are idle a certain time. You are getting a bad deal here, shouldn't get disconnected with a cable.

Windows machines have advanced power mangement settings that disable ports and power hungry equipment whenever inactivity is detected (or not detected). Take a look at the port (modem) under My Computer/control panel/system/ and see if power management properties have been applied to this modem (port). I had the same problem until I told the windows software to leave this port alone and not shut it down (sleep mode) during inactivity.

If you think your IPS (internet service provider) you have is logging you off to save their own bandwidth, just do a "Ping" on this IP address (Start\Run\windows\Ping.exe IP Address of ISP 122.33.44.555). The "Ping" will tell you the connection speed (sort of) and let you know if you still have a connection. Either way, you modem should "work properly" and the ISP connection should be "working properly" (Win## Device driver).

I downloaded some serious sounding software called "Stay connected" which promised to sent tthe ISP some ****e while I was in idle reading this ,for eg,deluding them into thinking I was still active, but it does not seem to work.
Frequent and constant disconnects. But! a good idea. Why can't somebody improve it.?? Who can stay alert for more than a few minutes nowadaaas??

Like monroerl mentioned, turn off power management and test.

Also if you are using a cable/DSL router, they can disconnect you if it is set-up to.

The same can happen if you have a firewall that has an auto disconnect option, such as MidPoint's firewall.

I'm intrigued by the last two replies and would like to know more about that. Figarowa, can you tell more about this particular setup. Are we talking about just the one PC with the modem?
