upping agp bus (to dangerous?)

ok i was wondering if its safe to up the agp bus or if its just to dangerous to do... If its not too dangerous whats a good number to go to? also would this just bring a slight increase or a decent increase in performance?

Do you mean the AGP 2X/4X/8X setting? You can only set it to the highest the card can support, there is no way to overclock the AGP speed.

no no... not the 1x 2x 4x 8x thing... the bus speed... i thought there was an option in my bios to up it.. i'll reboot and check (maybe i'm crazy)

As far as I know, the AGP bus speed is not adjustable like the CPU or RAM FSB.

oh i'm sorry i went to bios and its the agp/pci frequency (aka 66/33 default)

edit: i looked in manual and it says it is for better system performance.. the thing is automatically set on auto in the bios so i guess thats good.. I was just thinking for a second it'd let me overclock my video card a bit more...

It will. Really you should never take the PCI bus above 37 in my opinion.

But I have seen them much higher. Some video cards will take 90 on the AGP bus from what I've read. I wouldn't try it and I think there are probably damn few cards that will do it.

It is comon to see people running their PCI buses at 40 or even a little more. It's also very common for these people to spend a lot of time reformatting and reinstalling their software.

Increasing the FSB, will also increase the PCI and AGP buses. It overclocks the CPU too. So by increasing the FSB, you are inscreasing the AGP bus.
There is no way to tell how high you will be able to increase it until your do it. There are many variables. Remember that this is overclocking, so there is a greater chance of instability the higher you take it.

Increasing the FSB does not necessarily increase the PCI/AGP busses - it depends on your motherboard.

yeah i already had my p4 2.4 at 2.7 so my ram would run at 400 and on my p4pe it keeps the agp/pci and cpu/ram seperate...

so if i did increase it to say 37pci/whatever agp it'd show a good increase in performance or should i just leave it on auto and let the mobo do the work by itself?

Don't bother increasing the pci/agp bus. You aren't really going to see any performance increase, and there will be a better chance of instability and data corruption on your hdds.
