I have a dvi monitor which works great on my geforce dvi/vga video card.

I biught an adapter to connect to another pc's vga video card but it doesnt work, so I connected it to the vga output of the other pc and it doesnt work there either. I get some beep codes but dont remeber exactly what they were.

Anyone had experience with a dvi/vga adapter?

Thanks

Rob

Doesn't the monitor have a VGA input in addition to the DVI? You might just need a standard monitor cable.

DVI/VGA adapter work only with DVI-I not DVI-D.
If your monitor has DVI-D you can't connect it to VGA, as DVI-D has no analog pins like DVI-I.
Look at the connections. The DVI-I has 4 additional holes.

You were right. I have a DVI-D cable, I'm going to go get a DVI-I cable today. Thanks for your help.

It's not only a matter of the cable, it's also a matter of the monitor's connection. If the monitor has no DVI-I connection then a DVI-I cable won't help. It will only work if your monitor has a DVI-I connection.

once again youre right. you the only person I know that knows anything about this. All the computer stores in Tucson scratch there heads. This website was helpful to me http://www.pacificcable.com/dvi.htm . I found out I have the wrong type of connection on my monitor it was digital only (DFP).
Well at least now I know. I havnt been able to install a video card in this old compaq. but Im always looking for an excuse to buy a new pc, maybe this will help.
thanks again.

The only PCI DVI-D video cards I can find doing a quick Google search are the semi-pro 3D Labs and Matrox cards - those will cost more than a new monitor I think.

thanks for the info.
I think I'll have to stick with vga for the compaq.
