AMD Stock HSF, Thumbs down?

Hey guys,
ive been wondering this question.
Some say that the HSF is a cheap POS and ok its probably not as good as TT Volcanoes, but HEY they come with 3 year warranty, and wouldnt that mean that it would at least last that long? But after the warranty you can get your HSF but who is gonna have the same CPU for 3 years? cmon give them some slack.

What's your opinion?

I can hear my stock fan from two rooms away. I always have my music turned up a little loud so I can hear it above the noise.

My stock fan doesn't seem to be cooling to well either. I really need to get a better one...

I would trade extra warranty for a little bit of extra noise. Also, I woudn't really worry about it cooling enough, unless you're overclocking, as AMD probably tested all that when they chose what HSF to put on their chips. HTH

I'm not OCing. My system just runs hot. 116'F in a 60'F room, 120'F in a 70'F room... I wonder what it's going to be like in the summer when it gets to be 80-90'F. :p

I have to disagree, I just built a 1700+ with the stock HSF and not only is it quiet but my cpu temp is running 32C in a 70'F room. I swear you can't hear this computer running while sitting right next to it.

I havn't had any problems with the stock AMD cooler, they're relatively quiet and keep the temp at a reasonable level.

I figure, if the retail one wouldn't do a good enough job, AMD wouldn't package or warranty the cpu with it. I'm running a retail XP 1800+ with no problems whatsoever. Granted my apartment is always an icebox, even with the heat on!

The stock should be just fine. I use to go OEM, but then buy a stock fan for my builds, as 1) it was cheaper at one time, 2) I usually got the "next size" up. So, if I were building a 1.333 gig box, I'd get a 1.4 stock HS/fan combo. That setup is in my wife's system. My 1800+ is also running a 1.4 T-Bird stock fan, as it's also rated to a 2200+.

For client builds, I normally buy the PIB (aka "retail") for the 3 year warrantee.

But, starting now, I'm buying the PIBs for my personal builds. In fact, my 2700+ retail just arrived. Why give clients a 3 yr war, and not myself?? Also, it's now cheaper that way, too.

To date, they have all been very quite. However, I've "heard" AMD changed fan makers, so this will be my first stock fan since I've heard that.

I've tried the fancy coppers, and the orbs, and this-n-that, but I litterally returned each one, as 1) they didn't lower temps enough for me to warrant the extra $$, 2) it's just too much $$ that I could put toward my next vid card or CPU, 3) most people don't understand that running in the 40s - 50's is not a death kiss on the CPU.

If you have to have it quiet and overclock at the same time, go for a speeze. I'm very happy with mine. hardly any noise and my CPU runs 32c in a 70 degree room. Also, they aren't overly pricey.

I've built a few with retail fans and they are much quieter than my volcano 6 and run just as cool

I have an SK7 and a panaflow fan, came home the other day and I hit the button to rutn my comptuer on and it turned off. Its so quiet I didnt think it was on, haha. It runs full load at 42 degrees. Ive ideled at like 34 before. Great fan/sink combination if you are looking for a good one.

I almost always order the OEM CPU and then extend the warranty which only costs about 5 bucks more. The I use a SPeeze, thermaltake of vantec HSF.

Yes, OCing voids the warranty.

I got my 2700+ retail version running! It's nice.

When I ordered it, the retail version was only$9 more than the OEM version. You can't buy a HS/fan combo for close to that price.

Second, at NewEgg anyway, the additional CPU warrantee is $15.

My stock fan is nice and quite. And it's keeping my 2700+ at 39°C as we "speak." Under full load, it held at 45° for my 20 minute test.

So, for $282 US, I got the CPU, the HS/fan combo that's quite and works great, and I got the 3 year warrantee, and free shipping.

If I went OEM, it would have been: $273 for the CPU, $15 additional for only 1 year warrantee, about $50 for the separate HS / Fan combo, and, since the HS/fan combo doesn't have free shipping, add about another $10 shipping. That comes to $348, $66 more than going retail. Gee, that'd get me the new vid card I need for a spare build I'm working on....

One thing to remember though - to preserve the 3 year warranty on the PIB, AMD requires you to use the thermal pad - if you scrape it and use compound, warranty goes poof. Same if you replace the HSF with an aftermarket one, no matter how good.

Don't know... but as a (use-to-was) professional mechanic, how could I tell a starter was not defective, but was overcranked by the customer? There are ways for everything, it seems....

<--- do they take THAT much time to figure out if its been oced by tests or do they find something right away, or they just give you a brand new cpu since ppl are lazy these days.
