I have been running 3DMark2001se with no problems at all for the last two days ( I just got done building this system ) at various different configurations and it runs fine. Now all of the sudden it has become tempermental. It will sometimes shut down in the middle of something, and it won't let me select any antialising options, when just earlier today I could use 6sample with no prob. What the hey? Any ideas?

Try running your system without 3DMark2001se on and see what happens.

All of the above plus:
Check temps.
Run dxdiag.
Depending on your OS use either Restore or System File Checker.
The first will return you to a time when everything worked and the second should find any corrupted files.
You may want to remove/reinstall the 9700 drivers/control panel.
The driver removal is straight foreward but for the control panel do the following:
Pres Ctrl-Alt-Del; in task manager go to processes.
close: Ati2evxx.exe
close: ATiptaxx.exe
Go to add/remove programs and uninstall control panel.
Reinstall and test system again.
I had problems with the control panel for catalyst 2.4 which cleared up when I installed the latest drivers and control panel update for 3.1 .
I'm not sure what caused it but if you've got 2.4 it could be a point to consider.
Finally, uninstall/reinstall 3Dmark.
That's the software check. I'm guessing you don't have much on the comp yet so the last resort is reformat and start over.
If you've had no luck it's time to start on the hardware.
Last note. If you got major file corruption just running 3Dmark you may have a hardware problem anyway. Check cables and run a diagnostic for your HDD put out by the manufacturer of the drive in addition the usual memory test and so on.
