CD-Rom errors

Everytime I get insert a CD into the Drive, as soon as auto insert kicks in I get an illegal operation. Also, I often get The blue screen "With the CD is not in the drive or it may be dirty" when running programs of the CD. I am running win 98 SE. Is the thing about to die out on me?

Well, did you do anything before (installing programs, system tuning etc.) or did it just happen spontaneously ?
I don't know how old your drive is, but maybe the laser lens is dirty, therefore the drive couldn't read very good.
So try a cleaning-cd (they are not expensive :) ), and we'll see what happens.
