View Full Version : CS Microphone Problem

I have been having problems as of late with my microphone in Counter-Strike games. I have a headset with a mic from Radioshack, that worked just fine until a few days ago. In the game my voice is extremely garbled. The people in the server, and the voice_loopback command verified this.

I used the VoiceTweak utility included in the HL directory, and lowered the volume on the microphone, it had been turned up all the way. That helped a tiny bit. I checked the mic using Windows Sound Recorder, and the recording sounded very clear.

Apart from reinstalling the game, is there a tweak or trick I could try? I am starting to think it is lag on the servers, but then the voice would be delayed, not garbled. Any ideas? TIA :)

sorry to use your thread, but since they're both related I'll add my friends problem. He can't use his mic in game, it works fine outside of the game though. for it to work in windows he has to uncheck the mute mic in the sound panel, but when he does that and uses it in the game there's and echo and he can't be understood. If he leaves it muted, when he tries in the game, all you can hear is a static like version of what ever sound is happening in the game.

LordofEchoSide,

I think your friend's mic is picking up the sounds from his headset/speakers.

Alaron56,

Do you have another mic you could try. Any kind will do; it's just to test to see if your voice will go tough okay with another mic. If yes, then your mic might be bad. If you still have the problem, then it would be software/net related.

If you're using a headset, turn the volume in the earphones down, and move them further away from each ther; if possible.

If it's the speakers, turn down the speakers and mic volume.

I'm not sure that's the problem. my headset is different, but I can put it all the way up and I don't get an echo. plus he doesn't have it that loud. I'll have to try mine at his house.

Do you know what sound card he has?

Yes, what game is he using and (I'm assuming he's doing multiplayer) how he is connecting to a multiplayer game.

Hmm... that's a new one I haven't heard of before...

I just did a google search for it, bu it didn't help too much since you don't have the model/number of the card.

You could try looking for driver updates next.

Thanks for the reply force_flow2002. I will test it out with my old mic soon. It seems my friend took it home with him after our last LAN party....;)

I finally got my old microphone back. I tested it out with Windows Sound Recorder and in CS. It is the same situation, with it sounding fine in Windows and being all garbled in the game. Ive messed with the voice_avggain command but it doesnt help. Does anyone have any ideas? TIA

Do you have the same conditions when you run your game as when you test it in the sound recorder?

Try checking the settings in the game.

What's your net connection?

I have the same conditions inside and outside of the game. I havent changed any volume or audio properties. I have checked the settings in the game, and they seem to be no different. I have voice enabled, with volume up. I have RoadRunner Cable, 2megs down/384up.
