Can't get sound

I had an old computer in my office upgraded with a new motherboard some months ago (ASUS CUV4X-E) for use at home. I forgot to ask for a sound card to be installed, but figured I would do it myself later. I upgraded the opsys to windowsXPpro

I bought a modest PCI sound card from CompUSA. Installed it and the drivers but got no sound. I tried moving the card, downloading latests driver--nothing worked.

Thinking my cheapness may be getting in the way, I bought soundblaster speakers and another better soundblaster card. Installed it, loaded drivers--still no sound.

I cannot get even system sounds.

Any ideas?

do you have the speaker icon in the system tray

check in the device manager
is there any explantion marks, or does it all look ok

go to control panel
look at sounds and see what you can find in there.

you should have heard some sound when you installed the software for the sound blaster card

post back here with what you find
and we will go from there

Yes. The sound bullhorn icon is in the system tray. The device manager lists the PCI16 card and reports that it is working properly. And it looks as if the driver is installed.

There were no sounds when installed.

Oh yeah. A few other tricky things. (1) The soundblaster installation CD locks up every time I try the installation procedure. Im not sure how much of it is finished, though the driver appears to be loaded. (2) When I had the first cheapo sound card and ancient cheapo speakers, I got "some" very very faint, almost inaudible sound.

But then, nothing. And now, not even faint sound.

Could I have IRQ problems?

Thanks again for your help. I need the sound for my kids and games and music and stuff.

what kind of speakers do you have plugged into the sound card, and are you sure they are connected in the correct jack.

you must have amplified type speakers with the volume control on it

if you is it ac powered or battery type

it almost seames to me that the sound card is working ok and you may have speaker problem

I botched my first try at a reply.

I got new speakers made by the same company as the soundblaster card. But it is possible that I have them connected improperly. The diagram was in 2pt type and I am not sure I got it right.

I could experiment with that and see if I can verify the proper configuration. But, wouldn't the color coding of the connectors on the card and the speakers by the same manufacturer match proper connection? I mean I have the pink connector plugged into the pink slot and the green one to the green slot.

If this model has onboard audio, did you disable all the audio related settings in the BIOS?
