What are chip sets?

I know what a processor does, what is the function of the motherboard and what is a chipsets?

Simplified terms, the motherboard and chipset are what tie everything (The RAM, video, sound, USB, serial and parallel connections, etc) all together allowing them to communicate with each other.

The processor is usually sold separate from the mobo. But yeah, the mobo has the chipset built into it, along with the slots for the RAM, video card, sound card, etc. You just have to buy the cards you want to go in the slots.

The "chipset" is a component on the motherboard. It acts kinda like a "traffic cop" and controls most functions. Every other component depends on the chipset. Some chipsets are more expensive (and more stable) than others, making boards with the better chipsets more expensive. The chipset is more important than the cpu choice IMO.
