How fast is the CD-R media rated for?

Media, media, media.
Also even though the burners are getting to be real speed deamons, audio burns are more likly to be successful at speeds of 24x or less. Data burns can go at pretty fast speeds.
So, with modern burners, you may go out and get the highest quality 52x rated media that you go to burn it, the drive will slow down to compenste for data streams.

It also depends on the machine. It seems Nero automatically detects the best reliable speed and doesn't let you go faster than that.

I sold a 32X burner and installed it on a Cely 333 machine. It wouldn't go upper than 12X.

Update your Nero to 5.5.10.7b.

Also remember that 52x is only at the outer edge of the cd - it starts in the center around 16 to 20x and steps up as it works its way out. There has not been a constant speed reader or burner faster than 12x ever - except for the old Kenwoods with multiple lasers.

can the drive actually detect the maximum write speed of the media? i think the problem lies more in what nuc is saying.

Dunno if the burners nowadays are intelligent to detect the speed of the media and adjust themselves to it. Most prolly they can.

My Creative 6x4x24x is an "old" burner and it cannot. I remember when 6x was an awesome speed and all media was 4x. I tried to burn @ 6x using 4x media and the drive obeyed my command but it also made coasters out of those discs. I had to set the speed manually.

My new MSI 48x once copied a CD @ 48x and the next day when I created a data CD the maximum speed it allowed me was 40x or 36x (don't remember exactly). It's rather confusing.

so far i've burnt ten cd's, and no coasters! even if it does burn at 32x, it's a lot better than my old phillips 8x that i would only burn at 6x.

What speeds are available on the Burn tab in the Write Speed spinbox? If 32x is as high as it goes, you probably have a firmware issue with the drive. If it's set to 52x and it only burns at 32x, then it's a media detection issue.

I know most of these newer burners can actually detect the speed of the media and burn to that speed accordingly. Nero, in my opinion, is one of th ebest burner programs out there and will easily adjust itself to compensate for the burner's speed and the media's speed....

Nero has just been updated again - 5.5.10.15 and InCD 3.5.20.0.

thats wierd, youd think that if you had a drive that could do that seed, it would allow you to go that fast. mine is only a slow drive by the newest standards, 16x10x40x, but at least mine lets me burn at the top rated speeds!

But one thing i dont have in common with all of you, is im using Roxio. You all seem to be using Nero

Roxio does both kinds of speed setting, if i put in a 8x CD, it only lets me burn it at 8x or slower, if i put in a 32x CD, it will only let me go as high as 16x.

Homer go get some different media say 40x and see if the drop down box changes. I bought some media one time that was suppose to be 40x but it would on register as 32x.

IT is the media.

I have some CDs it registers and lets me burn at 24x others 46x

If you open Nero without putting media in the drive, you CAN get at the Burn tab and check the box - if it tops out at 32x its either firmware or you need to update Nero.

Nero's support site:

LTR-52246S EIDE/ATAPI 52x24x52x 5.5.9.8 or later

Latest firmware:

http://www.liteonit.com/webfw/LTR-52246S/R526S0C.zip

How to upgrade:

Also check this (written in finest Chinglish):

Why NERO recording software only allow me to chose 8X or 16X speed after I upgraded to your latest Firmware?

With the Firmware upgrade, your current NERO version may not recognized your drive as high speed recording device. You may solve your problem by doing the following : Start your NERO application
Place blank disc in the drive ( You must use a media certified to support your driveˇ¦s maximum recording speed, i.e. you need a 40x media for your LTR-40125S drive )
In NERO, click on " File ", " Preference ", select " Cache " tab, then select " Test all drive speeds ". Or simply go to disc copy menu, under the " Copy " tap, check the dirveˇ¦s maximum speed. This way, NERO will understand your drivesˇ¦ maximum performance, and allow to choose that speed in the future

( Note : NERO Ver. 5.5.5.6 or later do NOT support writing speed below 8x. If you have chose " High Speed " option during installation, then your choice will only start from 8x. If the above step did NOT solve your problem, then you will need to un-install NERO, remove NERO directly manually from Windows Explorer and reinstall NERO. )

It's funny I have a liteon 52x, but I have never burned anything that fast. I bought a spindle of 40x cd's that let me burn at 48x, but I went back to buy the same brand 48x, hoping it would hit 52x, it only let me burn at 24x. crazy days... is there 52x media out there yet?

If you run the NEROINFO tool, and plop in various brands and speeds of media, you'll see that the drive does indeed sense the maximum speed of the media. I even have some CD-RW media that's claimed to be 12x that it tells me is 10x, so much for truth in advertising! :D

i check several cds, especiallt TDK where it can write at any speed but it cant the top speed is 32 right now so dont be worried i stick with 24 on my 48. for quality.

I'd like someone with a 52x drive to try this..........

Do up a data CD layout that uses about 1/2 of a CD - somewhere around 300 to 400 megs. Burn it at 32x, then burn it again at 52x - and post the times. I'd bet the difference is almost negligible. I'd try it but I "only" have a 24x drive.
