I see why you guys dont allow these threads to get too political...Im sitting here in my PC class, and some how everyone started talking about me going into the marines(on lunch break)...and everyone is saying this is a useless war, and no one agrees with me joining them(marines), and they call me a pawn...I now understand why you guys are so itchy about the political posts...cause right now I feel like hitting 3 of them dead in the face...

Yep - and the same goes for religious threads, that is a real good way to start flames too.

You can go hit anyone in the face you want to over at Forumclick.

Political and religious threads are the fast ways to start a fight.

I've seen it happen many times on another forum I visit. I don't even bother with the political and religious discussions anymore. They just drag on and on, are the same points brought up over and over again and envolve tons of arguing.

Civility sometimes is disraguarded when the debate reaches a certain point.

Think about it...Politics and Religion are responsible for most of the wars throughout history.

Besides, they really have nothing to do with a technology website.

avx487 , sometimes being a member of our armed forces is unpopular, sort of like people disliking the police until they need them. I for one am grateful that there are young men like yourself willing to sacrifice part of your life for our great country.
When I came home from Viet Nam , I wasn't a very popular guy amongst my peers, i got over it , but you know what? I'd do it all again in a heart beat.
Good luck to you

There are some people who are braver than others. Becoming a marine is the ultimate symbol of dedication to this country. I am proud of people like you.

Jokerman - I understand what you mean, I have had the privilege of talking to some career marines and navy officers, they tell me how when they came home from Nam it seemed like the whole country didnt care. I for one would like to say thank you, I appreciate the time you served and the sacrifices you made to guarantee the freedom of our country. Thank you for the support. You too Sleepypost:)

If it wasn't for my health that is where I should be right now.

Don't pay attention to the croaks of cravens avx. The military life is the most honorable profession for a man.

well, I dont know if I will go career in the marines, though it is something I have considered. It all depends how the war is going after my 4 years is up...

God willing it will be over and done with, but if there is still a problem, Ill stay on for as long as Im needed.

I did 3 years in the Navy - and stayed in the reserves. A few years later, the economy was really bad so I rejoined active and stayed for 5 years. I stayed in the reserves after that too - and retired from the reserves with 24 years total service. This is going to get me a nice check starting when I'm 60, last time I calculated it (1995) it will be $800 a month. Not bad for part time, and that number will be adjusted to reflect current active pay scale.

If you do your 4 years and decide that you should get out and move on (but don't absolutely hate it), do consider staying in the reserves - that way you can look at a partial retirement in addition to being available if you are needed.

My hat's off to you, avx. Ignore the morons that are hassling you, they'll be the first ones to whine and cry if another strike is made on us. Protect us! Protect us! They're probably stupid enough to think that Saddam and Osama will turn around and be wonderful people if we just "show them some love". Bull. Our survival depends on our strength. These people need to try to grasp some sense of reality.

Dok - I got a friend who went Navy and is on a sub. He stays underwater for like 7 months at a time. I dont know if that is the way they do it on all subs, but on his, its a minimum 7 months at a time....Something to consider...

I personally couldnt do it...8 second showers, those TIGHT corridors and living spaces, I need room to run around...

I'm in the Air Force avx487 and there's two parts to the air force (officers and enlisted) The officers pilot the planes and enlisted persons like myself support. There's many other things than just piloting. I think I have the best job. I get to blow s**t up (I assemble and test missles and bombs). It's a lot of fun!

Hey Avx487,

I respect you for you decision... and am a bit jealous. I was in the Marines Officer Candidate Program in college and was 2 weeks away from my first summer in Quantico when I destroyed my knee and ankle playing basketball. My hats off to you man. Seems like we have a lot of veterans here, myself included. I did 11 years in the USAF, before I was injured and retired. There are a couple of flying jobs for enlisted people, although they are actually considered part of the flight crew. I was a Flight Engineer, the guy that sits sideways behind the copilot with all of the knobs and switches to play with. Think Mr. Scott from Star Trek on a smaller scale :D

@ Mikeheitz: my case was kinda similar. I had even talked with a veterinary doctor who was my teacher at college and was a retired colonel. He was about to get me enlisted in the 8th tank battalion of the 16th military zone, when my back decided otherwise. No military career for me. :( :(

Why this happened? Because of a vicious posture I developed because of too much use of the computer mouse. :(

There was a story a couple nights ago on tv that talked about sub life. They said the guys on this sub went down for 6 months at a time, but they could email their families every so often. So, it's not like they're totally cut off from everyone. One guy, they said, even emailed his daughter every night. They also talked about the bedding accomodations. I think they said they used a term "hotbedding" or something like that, cuz they work in shifts. When you go to bed, the bed may still be warm from the guy that was just there before you but had to get up for his shift. I don't think I could handle the tight spaces. I'm not exactly what you'd call claustrophobic, but I like my space.

I have two friends now that do not really exist anymore thanks to the spooks or whatever took them. Who knows what happened to the first of them. The other, last I recall, wanted to do encryption on our deep sea nuclear subs (Ohio class?), the so-called first or second response "boomers" I think the military calls them. I can only guess he succeeded. I think his family gets a few letters a month saying he is still alive. Peachy.

My only pact was if I ever completely failed in the private sector, I would let the spooks carry me off as well.

Respectfully,

Demosthenes

I was an airdale. The Navy has a lot of airplanes too. Sub sailors are bubbleheads and surface sailors are blackshoes. 3 types of squids.

Flyboy? We called them zoomies.

I've heard Marines called grunts too, this refers to anyone who lives in trenches I guess.

Gotta respect them all, it can be a thankless job but somebody has to do it or life as we know it won't continue.

avx - 4 years in the Marines (or any other branch of the military) are going to teach you very valuable lessons about life, and I mean this in a very positive light.

cypher - LoL, I know what you mean. I have been told 1000 times over "They can promise you the world, and they will deliver jack S*#&!". And I believe them, I am fortunate enough to be able to speak with a few marine veterans, and they have told me a lot! Like dont shave your head before bootcamp, that just pisses em(DI's) off more, and me and my buddy chris actually were planing on shaving our heads the night before we left for boot..hehe, push ups and yelling at us avoided. Im only joining the marines for 2 reasons: payback, and college. And I have been guaranteed in paper that I will get both of those:D

Once again thanks for all the support guys, really means a lot.

Wish you could have got a shorter time frame. Would hate to see anyone trapped into something they didn't like for any longer than they had to be there. Been awhile since I got out of the Nav. They had varying lengths of time you could get. If you got college and whatever else out of them you probably didn't have a choice about the length of service. I'll give ya the first 3 rules I learned about the military, even before I got to boot-1) Look out for #1. 2) Cover your ass. 3) **** rolls downhill. Pretty much applies to civilian life as well. I can't say I enjoyed my stay with Uncle Sam 100%(was AWOL for 26 days), but it definitely added to my education in the game of life. Take whatever schooling they offer or anything else they offer too. Suck it up and tough out boot and it will be all downhill from there. Good Luck!!!!

I couldn't resist - I just got this in my e-mail.

---------------------------------------------------------

Military Rules for the Non-Military Personnel

Dear Civilians:

We know that the current state of affairs in our great nation have many
civilians up in arms and excited to join the military. For those of you
who can't join, you can still lend a hand. Here are a few of the areas we
would like your assistance:

1) The next time you see an adult talking (or wearing a hat) during the
playing of the National Anthem ... kick their ass.

2) When you witness firsthand someone burning the American Flag in
protest.... kick their ass.

3) Regardless of the rank they held while they served, pay the highest
amount of respect to all veterans. If you see anyone doing otherwise,
quietly pull them aside and explain how these Veterans fought for the very
freedom they bask in every second. Enlighten them on the many sacrifices
these Veterans made to make this Nation great. Then hold them down while a
Disabled Veteran kicks their ass.

4) (GUYS) If you were never in the military, DO NOT pretend that you were.
Wearing battle dress uniforms (BDU's), telling others that you used to be
"Special Forces," and collecting GI Joe memorabilia, might have been okay
if you were still seven. Now, it will only make you look stupid and get
your ass kicked.

5) Next time you come across an Air Force member, do not ask them, "Do you
fly a jet?" Not everyone in the Air Force is a pilot. Such ignorance
deserves an ass kicking (children are exempt).

6) If you witness someone calling the U.S. Coast Guard non military, inform
them of their mistake...and kick their ass.

7) Roseanne Barr's singing of the National Anthem is not a blooper...it was
a disgrace and disrespectful. Laugh, and sooner or later your ass will be
kicked.

8) Next time Old Glory (U.S. flag) prances by during a parade, get on your
damn feet and pay homage to her by placing your hand over your heart.
Quietly thank the military member or veteran lucky enough to be carrying
her...of course, failure to do either of those could earn you a severe ass
kicking.

9) What Jane Fonda did during the Vietnam War makes her the enemy. The
proper word to describe her is "traitor." Just mention her nomination for
"Woman of the Year" and get your ass kicked.

10) Don't try to discuss politics with a military member or a veteran. We
are Americans and we all bleed the same regardless of our party
affiliation. Our Chain of Command, is to include our Commander In Chief.
The President (for those who didn't know) is our CIC regardless of
political party. We have no inside track on what happens inside those big
important buildings where all those representatives" meet. All we know is
that when those civilian representatives screw up the situation, they call
upon the military to go straighten it out. The military member might
direct you to Oliver North. (I can see him kicking your ass already.)

11) "Your mama wears combat boots" never made sense to me ... stop saying
it! If she did, she would most likely be a vet and probably kick your ass!

12) Bin Laden and the Taliban are not communists, so stop saying "Let's go
kill those Commie's!!!" And stop asking us where he is!!!! Crystal balls
are not standard issue in the military. That reminds me ... if you see
anyone calling those damn psychic phone numbers; let me know, so I can go
kick their ass.

13) Flyboy (Air Force), Jar Head (Marines), Grunt (Army), Squid (Navy) etc,
are terms of endearment we use describing each other. Unless you are a
service member or vet, you have not earned the right to use them. Could
get your ass kicked.

14) Last but not least, whether or not you become a member of the military,
support our troops and their families. Every Thanksgiving and religious
holiday that you enjoy with family and friends please remember that there
are, literally, thousands of sailors and troops far from home wishing they
could be with their families. Thank God for our military and the
sacrifices they make every day. Without them, our country would get its
ass kicked.

"It is the soldier, not the reporter who has given us the freedom of the
press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us the freedom of
speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who gives us the
freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves
beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the
protester to burn the flag."

~Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, Sergeant, USMC

Having just moved into his new office, a pompous, new colonel was sitting at his desk when an airman knocked on the door.
Conscious of his new position, the colonel quickly picked up the phone, told the airman to enter, then said into the phone, "Yes General, I'll be seeing him this afternoon and I'll pass along your message. In the meantime, thank you for your good wishes, sir.

Feeling as though he had sufficiently impressed the young enlisted man, he asked, "What do you want?"

"Nothing important, sir," the airman replied, "I'm just here to hook up your telephone."

Hey avx! I'm proud of you to choose what you want to do & follow through with it! The next time those goofballs say this war is not necessary, ask them if they thought the WTC & Pentagon was not necessary! Also ask if they lost someone there, if they didn't then ask them what if they did? Some people are so stupid to believe that everything is supposed to be okay & we will be at peace & have a wondeful world together. They need to read the bible & see what has happened over our time on this world. It also says that when peace comes to this world watch out! Good luck in the jarhead group & watch your back!

Hey avx! One more thing, someone sent this to me the other day & I thought this would fit your situation well! May God bless & keep you safe!

Got Your Back

I am a small and precious child,
my dads been sent to fight...
The only place I'll see his face,
is in my dreams at night.
He will be gone too many days
for my young mind to keep track.
I may be sad, but I am proud.
My daddy's got your back...

I am a caring mother.
My son has gone to war...
My mind is filled with worries
that I have never known before.
Everyday I try to keep
my thoughts from turning black.
I may be scared, but I am proud.
My son has got your back...

I am a strong and loving wife,
with a husband who had to go.
There are times I'm terrified
in a way most never know.
I bite my lip, and force a smile
as I watch my husband pack...
My heart may break, but I am proud.
My husbands got your back...

I am a soldier...
Serving Proudly, standing tall.
I fight for freedom, yours and mine
by answering this call.
I do my job while knowing,
the thanks it sometimes lacks.
Say a prayer that I'll come home.
It's me who's got your back.

It always cracks me up when these people do not agree with someone entering the military or calling this a 'useless war'. Maybe they have already forgotten the senseless terrorist attacks since 1983 on US soldiers and our country. Maybe they forgotten that a soldier, not a politician is the reason they speak English and not German or Japanese right now... it amazes me they also forget that a soldier is what gave them their freedoms in the first place - work where you want, do what you want, all thanks to a soldier. How quick we forget...
