I have DSL w/ Bellsouth. Works great when ON. When I log off, a MAXIMUM of 10 minutes later,I cannot log back on. I have to restart computer to be able to log on again. Am using WIN ME, but identical problem w/ WIN 98 SE. My friend brought his laptop over, loaded needed software to go DSL w/ my account, and it worked flawlessly. Somehow the problem is definately with my machine. Why is this happening, and how do I fix it? Very specific machine specs follow....
Here is the Web Page with specifics on my machine
http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=GENXT853 All is correct- Except it was shipped with 256 Ram-And I am using the EXTERNAL USB DSL Modem, Not the onboard modem. (one possibility I was thinking of is maybe I have to disable the onboard modem?) Below is over view of current specs.
Intel Celeron 866MHz Socket 370 FC-PGA CPU with Heatsink and Fan - 256 MB PC100 SDRAM Installed; - Socket 370 Motherboard with Intel 810 Chipset - Integrated AGP Video with Shared Memory - Integrated AC '97 Audio with Crystal Codec - 30GB 4500RPM IDE Hard Drive Installed - 8x8x32 IDE CD-RW Drive Installed - 48x IDE CD-ROM Drive Installed - 1.44MB Floppy Drive Installed - PCI Ethernet NIC Installed - PCI 56K v.90 Modem Installed THANK YOU so much for taking time to look at this for me!!!

i was having similar problems with bellsouth dsl, but not to that extent. i'm just wondering, do you know about the control panel kind of thing that you can access from your internet browser? all you have to do is type "launchmodem" in your url field and it should pop up. you can control a bunch of settings from there. i only found out you could do this accidentally when i was browsing on bellsouth's website.
If your DSL modem has an Ethernet port, switch it over to your Ethernet adapter from the USB. Ditch the Bellsouth software and use RASPPPoE or the builtin PPPoE client if you have WinXP.

I have Bellsouth/DSl and I am using the 3Com internal modem. I have never had a problem. My neighbor does have problems with his USB modem. Maybe you should disconnect the internal or external. That could be a conflict.
The internal modem in that machine is not a DSL modem - it's a standard 56k winmodem.

disabling the 56k will have not effect.
Which is the exact DSL modem you have? if you have the WESTELL modem switch to the ethernet cable and use the modems built in PPPOE software located at 192.168.1.254 or launchmodem from your broswer.
If you dont' have the westell post back with the modem u do have. Bellsouth has a few USB DSL modems but only the westell and Homeportal's have both USB and Ethernet. All the others are either or, not both.

Does not have ethernet fitting. Only "in" from phone and "out" from USB.

Must be the alcatel Speed touch USB? Looks like a stringRay?
2 lights on it?
Does the ADSL Light start blinking when you can't connect?
The problem could be in your Netstack. goto control panel, network, and post back what you have in your Network componets. I am wondering if you have anything like MS VPN support, Dial up adapter number 2 installed. I have seen stuff like that cause problems.
Also if you have Netbeui, IPX SPX protcals.
It would be best if you can post the list of everything from your Network adapters. You want no more then 5 that begin with TCP/IP. but there are correct orders to remove extra componets.

Yes, about the modem, you describe it perfectly. Am not sure about blinking light. Following are specs you asked for;
1-Dial up adapter, 2-Realtek RTL8139(A)-based PCI Fast Ethernet adapter, 3-NDISWAN Alcatel SpeedTouch USB ADSL PPP 4-TCP/IP Dial-Up Adapter 5- Realtek RTL8139(A)-based PCI Fast Ethernet adapter. The first two are preceeded by a PCI card ICON, the last 3 are preceeded by an ICON that looks like a piece of cable at a junction. Hope this helps.

I am thinking, it might be a good idea for you to get on the newest drivers for your modem.
for when ME/98 I would recommend you get PPPoA v1.6.3
since you are on USB.

Also with WIN ME, check your system resources, since you know it is something in the computer, check out start, settings, control panel, System, Preformance, check your Percent of system resources, they should be about 80 percent or HIGHER.
If the resources get low, it can cause problems like those you decribe.

I did just that today, the driver upgrade, exactly the one you specified. Helped only with QUALITY of connection while online. DID NOT remedy the real problem, though. As per % of resources free, no matter what I do or disable from running in the background, the best i can ever hope for is about 70%. Current free is 63%. Pretty lousy, huh? If i can ever figure that one out, it would be great! I sure hope you reply to some or all of this, BYTE! Thanks!!!!
