I recently purchase a new TDK drive to replace a 2 year old slow writer and was wondering if there are any steps I need to follow before I take my old drive out and install new drive????
Thanks,
spmiz
If you are going to use the same burning software, nope. If you are going to install new software, just uninstall the old stuff first. Jumper the drive the same way and swap it, boot it up, good to go.

The way I would do it is:
Go to device manager and remove the cd drive you are going to remove. If it tells you to reboot answer no.
Go to add/remove programs and if there are any program(s) that are drivers for the drive you are removing, remove them.
Shut down the pc.
Unplug the pc from the wall.
Unplug all cables on the back, (monitor, printer, etc.)
Put on ground strap!!!
Open case, disconnect cabling from drive to be removed and remove drive from pc.
Install new drive and insure correct cabling before mounting in drive bay.
make sure drive is secure.
remove ground strap after you are not gonna have your hands in the case.
At this point if you are confident you will not need back inside the case, button it up. Personally I don't close my case until I have booted up and made sure I have a good install.
Boot it up and follow onscreen prompts if any.
I usually pause during the boot to look and make sure my new drive is recognized. Do this with the pause key. You could also go to the bios setup utility to check to see if the drive is there.
Have drivers available if you have them. Some drives won't need any, depending on your operating system.
Have fun

There's not an IDE cd drive made that needs drivers for Win95 or newer.
