Now that it's getting close to tax time (USA) and if you are planning on doing it on the computer, stay clear of Turbo Tax. I was just reading a few stories about how they have embrace a technology that renders the install program inoperative after the first installation. Although one can understand the need for a company to protect their bottom line, the fact that when you aredealing with family finances and you get a crash in the main program, you would like to get it corrected as quick as possible. Unfortunately Intuit has taken the attitude of, " you will need to buy another copy."
So I suggest that you use Taxact from www.taxact.com for the package including both Federal and State with one E-File for each is just $19.99 and includes updates and site access for even previous years.

I switched to Tax Cut this year after many years as a TurboTax user for the reason you mentioned plus the cdilla thing.

I was going to abandon Intuit completely since Tax Cut came with a copy of MS money. I was only going to use it like I do Quicken and that is to keep track of personal finances such as checkbook and different bank accounts. Talk about a piece of bloatware. I messed with Money couple of hours and decided to stay with Quicken for now.

The only thing I can't tolerate about Money is its *requirement* that IE6 be installed, and if I'm not mistaken, it requires a Passport to be used? People wonder why I shun M$ software and deal with "clunky" 3rd party stuff?

we bought it because the label said it will do fed and state.
problem is it did but we needed to do two states and it would not let us do it, so we went back and got the one for state, and it would not even let us install it, so we ended up buying two programs and was still unable to do the taxes.

we then went back and got tax-cut and was able to do the other state.
talk about a rip=off

In previous years I believe TurboTax was a tad bit easier to use. I had some problems with TaxCut and pass thru income from a S corporation. Finally got it figured out but it wouldn't let me do a efile. That was no big deal and who knows, with tax law changes maybe I would have encountered same problem with TurboTax.

I will continue to use TaxCut unless TurboTax changes their policy. I don't pass software around, but my parnoid personalty requires I have a cheap PC sitting here with nothing but backup of anything I have that deals with finances.

Just for kicks I just re-installed Turbo-Tax for the third time. Installation went smooth with a notation saying it had to be re-installed using the same printer as before. As far as the State, when finished with the state tax it asked me if I wanted to do another State. I have printer sharing and even had it print to my other printer. Was I just lucky? BTW, I finished my taxes a month ago and removed the program. I only re-installed it to satisfy my curiosity.

I believe it left a marker when you uninstalled. You probably didn't have to do another activation when you reinstalled to same PC. I believe you would have activation problems if you had a HD failure and tried installing to a fresh drive or another PC.
