I am thinking about building a computer on my own. This could be a disaster but I am determined. Can I use the OEM from restore disc that belong to the computer I now have?

If that is a Compaq, Dell, ect. the answer is no. Those are PC specific.

Just be sure to get your OS when you purchase your hardware. Newegg and Mwave are sites most favored here and I have built a couple of systems ordering parts from them. They have the OEM version of Windows XP Home for around $90.00.

If you bought Hardware from them in the last 30 days you should ahve no problem getting OEM software.

It is not legal to use a restore CD from another machine on another build. It may or may not be physically possible and if you do succeed, you may have major driver issues (and activation issues if it's XP) - and if it comes with value added software, you may have a lot of junk to clean up too.

Welcome to PCMech, mshaff! ;)

I know that on Gateway machines, the restore CD and/or O/S CD only work on Gateway systems. I think they look for a gateway BIOS or something like that. So, if the comp you want to install the software isn't a Gateway, it won't install.

I tried it once just to see what would happen. :p
