FTP server with Linksys BEFSR41 router

Hi,

I have seen other posts concerning this but none of them have helped so I'll post my question:

How can I set up an FTP server with a Linksys BEFSR41 router?

I am running Win2000 Pro using BPFTP server. I can access the server fine from the LAN but not out of it. I have tried configuring the router from the router setup page but that hasn't made any difference.

Also, I have assigned a static IP on the server as 192.168.1.3. I was wondering if you use this IP to log onto the server or another IP?

That 192 IP is your internal IP, it can not be reached on the outside of the router. What you have to do is go into your router config page and you should see you external IP provided to you by your ISP. You also have to go into your router config and forward your FTP port to your FTP Servers IP address. Then, when people type ftp://xx.xx.xx.xx from the outside it will forward to your server and thus they will see FTP.

The ports you need to forward to the server's internal IP are 20 and 21 unless you are using nonstandard ports on your server.

I have a linksys router at home and it actually says which ports are my FTP, HTML, etc right next to the numbers. Its what I would call "dummy proof" (it helped me lol) but I forget which model router I have and yours may be different.

Just to let you know I followed the advice given here and I now have the FTP server up and running.

Nice work mikey_dude. I would ask for free space but I already have my own FTP at home. I mainly use it to bring presentations home from school that I was working on but cant fit on a floppy. It comes in handy! What ISP are you using? Also, do you have cable, dsl, etc?

I mainly only wanted FTP to store files from college instead of using colleges slow and unreliable FTP server. Also I can share files wherever I go.

I am using ntl's 600k cable service. Its serves my three computers and FTP server pretty well, except for the 1gigabyte transfer limit that they are now imposing on users :(

What connection do you have?

I have Comcast @home and it pretty much sux for any kind of hosting. It does work well for general use though, so I can't complain :)

Be careful trying to host with Comcast - running servers on a residential service is against their acceptable use policy.
