He has to allow sharing for the printer on the WIN98 PC. Start, settings, printer, right click and select properties. Under sharing tab enable sharing and give it a name.

Use CD that came with printer and install it on the XP PC. Then Start, printers and right click printer, select properties, and under general tab give it the name you gave it on the WIN98 PC.

This is assuming that he has the PC's networked and they can currently see each other.

It's easier than that. Physically install the printer on the 98 machine and share it. Open My Network Places on the XP box and find it - right click on it and select Connect. If it needs drivers it will ask you.

yea, i think you may need to install the sotware for the printer on all computer that want to use that printer, depending on how you have them connected

Not necessarily - as I said, if XP needs a driver it will ask for it. XP has built-in drivers for a heck of a lot of printers.

I have a similar problem sharing two computers, one with WinXP and one with Win98. I can share files, but cannot share the printer connected to the computer with Win XP. I feel that I need to add an additional driver for the printer for Win98 on the computer that currently has the printer driver for Win XP. Under printer sharing, I checked the box for a driver for 95, 98, etc. and go to additional drivers. I tried to add the Win98 driver, but am not able to add it from my printer disk or from a downloaded driver. I am going in circles. Any suggestions on how to add Win98 printer driver on computer that already has printer driver for WinXP. Or is this really the reason that I cannot connect to the printer on the WinXP machine. Thanks in advance. WolfpackRon.

Did you use the printer CD and install it on the WIN98 PC? Has printer sharing been enabled on the XP PC?

Tried to use printer CD to install driver on Win 98 machine, and was not able to figure out how because the autorun on the CD would not let me load the driver on the network. Talked with a radio computer tech show for 45 mins. and we continued to go in circles. Yes, I do have printer sharing enabled on Win XP machine. Am still trying to load driver on Win 98 machine. This should not be that difficult. WolfpackRon.

Ron - what is the exact model printer? Some specific printers require special procedures.

Try "point and print" - this is browsing to the printer share in Network Neighborhood, and right click on it, and select Install. It will ask you for the driver disk.

Last resort - this following procedure has ALWAYS worked if using "point and print" doesn't -

Physically install the printer on the Win98 machine on LPT1 and load the drivers. Disconnect it, install it on the XP machine and share it. Then go into the properties of the printer on the 98 machine and on the Details tab, add a network port, browse to the share.

Thanks for the replys. I finally figured it out by looking at the HP web site. As I had tried before, I used setup.exe and installed the path and name of the shared printer in place of LPT1, and was able to install the HP Deskjet 722C printer driver. A little tricky, but I finally stumbled on it after dancing all around it for a few days. Thanks, WolfpackRon.

Yep - the 722C is one of the printers requiring special procedures.

GLC, I had to format my computer with Win98 and I am not able to figure out how to install the drivers for the printer as mentioned in the above post. Do you have a printed procedure to do this. I cannot find it on the HP site as I had done before. It is the Deskjet 722C printer attached to the WinXP computer and shared with the Win98 Computer. I can share files, but not the printer. Thanks in advance!! WolfpackRon.

The easiest way to get a 722 working is use my "last resort" procedures in the above post. You may have to disable bidirectional communications in the driver on the 98 machine (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=bpd09124&locale=en_US&taskId=110&prodSeriesId=25400&prodTypeId=18972) and take any printer monitoring software out of the startup.

Thanks GLC. I used your "Last Resort" procedure to restore my Win98 printer drivers. Nothing about this has been easy. WolfpackRon.
