Greetings all....

........i'm a bit of a networking dummy so please be gentle with me....

.......i'm trying to set up file sharing between 3 (XP Pro) computers.

All 3 are connected to an Edimax BR-6104 broadband router, which is itself connected to the internet. All 3 computers can access the internet no problem.

I want to enable file sharing between the 3 but I got no idea how to do this. Before, i had 2 of the computers sharing via a cross-cable without problems, but now it seems like it's more complicated to set up.....before i just used the "search for computers" routine, but that's not working any more.

The (feeble) Edimax manual gives a confusing description of how to set up a LAN, but gives no suggestion of what/how to set up XP for this. ...

......I'm at a total loss as to where to start so i thought i'd ask on here......in my experience there is usually a simple and highly automated way to set up something in XP, so i'm a bit reluctant to start messing around with IP subnet masks, DHCP etc etc about which i have no understanding.

I'd really appreciate it if someone could take a quick look at the routers manual:

http://www.edimax.com.tw/download/manual/BR-6104_M.pdf

and give me a clue as to where to start.

Many thanks...................Darius:confused:

ok, some minor progress.....i removed one comp' to simplify things..........

.....i tried running the "search for computers" routine and this time one computer (A) can see the other (B), but B can't see A. Although A can see B, it can't access it:

"B is not accessable. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access this permissions. The network path was not found"

What permissions is it talking about. I already have file sharing permissions set, so what's the problem. Are there any other settings i need to know about? Also, why can A see B, but not vica versa?............thanks..D.

1. All computers must be in the same workgroup and have unique names.

Edit - 1A. All computers must have Client for Microsoft Networks and File and Print Sharing enabled on the LAN connection.

2. All computers must be running compatible protocols on the LAN connections (if they can all access the Internet, they all have TCP/IP, so this issue is taken care of).

3. All machines must have users added into the User Manager - this is computer management, local users and groups, users - in addition to the locally logged in user, you have to add the locally logged in users on all the other machines, matching usernames and passwords.

4. If everything is correct, you will not have to use Search - you can open My Network Places, Computers Near Me, and see all computers in your workgroup, and be able to access their shares.
