Got an old IBM 14 L 39. Picked it up cheap at a yardsale with the 386 it originally came with. No software with it. I mainly got the system for the monitor. I dumped the 386.

It's color and in good shape.

Anyway. I thought I would test it out on a newer computer.

During boot up with XP, it gives me a beautiful picture. But as soon as I get to the desktop, I have four overlapping images.
Same thing with a computer running 98.

I am looking for a driver for it, but can't find one.

I do notice that it has one less pin than more modern monitors (intentionally). But that doesn't explain the great picture during boot up.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
~Clover

I would have to wonder if it's the actual original monitor that came with that PC then it would be pretty old and I wonder if it would even be a VGA monitor.

Why would the picture change, though?

I would say because it is a 640X400 image (or something like that) the one you see while the boot up. when it gets to the desktop it will demand a resolution that the aged monitor can't handle.

XP defaults to 800x600 - and those old SVGA monitors sometimes have problems with that - but that particular one WILL work at 1024x768. It will definitely work at 640x480. I have an old 14" CTX that does the same thing.

Boot to safe mode to reset it to 640x480 at 60 Hz and go from there. If it gives you grief trying to reset it, change the monitor definition to a generic 640x480 VGA monitor to force it.
