Idle temp for Athalon XP2500

Is 53 C kinda hot for this processor, I'm using a Volcano 9+ w/ coolmod running full blast at 4800 rpm. With my XP2200 I was idling at 40C.

Is this just the norm cuz I want to O/C my system but 53C idling will just not cut it IMO if I start raising the FSB. So will my only alternative be the SLK seriers coolers with an 80mm delta fan pumping out huge amounts of air and NOISE (not worried about that, wear headphones for music and gaming).

Those temps are warm enough that you aren't going to OC very far before you get into high temps. You may want to clean everything back up (with alcohol or acetone or any number of aromatic compounds) and reinstall the HSF with a new coating of thermal grease to see if it helps get your temps down.

Try to find out if that temp is taken from inside the CPU core or from the CPU surface. Core temps will be higher.

I really don't understand...why do people who own 2GHz + processors want to OC their CPU's anyway? Those CPU's are so fast, you probably won't notice much of an improvement in performance unless you benchmark the system. Visually, you probably won't notice a thing.

Yeah, have a bet going with a couple of cousins on who can score the highest on 3dmark2003, 3dmark2001 & sisoft sandra, so i gotta find a way to OC or there is no way I'm going to win, hehe!

Where are you getting the temps from?

You could try to up the FSB a bit and see what happens with the temps and system stability. If things look good, take it up a bit more. Who knows, you might be able to OC that system a fair amount and win the bet.
