Heatsink Reseat

I have a 1700+ Palamino and it idles really high like 48 C and I want to reseat the hs/f after I clean them both with alcohol. I wanted to know if I should use the radio shack thermal compound or the one that come with the SOYO dragon ultra motherboard? How much of that should I use. This radio shack and other stuff are not greese they are sort of a thick glue like substance if that make any difference. Thanks :D

What motherboard are you getting the high temps from? Some SOYO motherboard's give high temp readings because of where the temps are reported from. Someone here was in contact with SOYO and was told that certain SOYO motherboards get the CPU temp from within the CPU core, not the surface, so temps are reported higher.

I'm using a ecs K7S5A. I have that soyo paste form another build I built for someone else. :D

If you are going to go to the trouble to do all that, get a premium silver-based compound like Arctic Silver or Antec Preference.

I don't want to pay for any more thing than I have to. Should I use that radio shack stuff or the other....stuff.....?:confused:

Well it depends. Radio Shack is probably the silicone based type. If the other is also silicone based it doesn't make any difference. It's awful hard to give a recommendation between Radio Shack and that other stuff without knowing what the two contain.

I just built a system in January using a XP 1700 on a Epox board and even with Artic Silver couldn't get it below 46C at idle. So I don't know that I would mess with it if I was you.

The temp reading you get for your particular CPU will depend on several things...ambient room temperature, the kind of parts you have installed, heatsink/fan unit, how big your case is, how many fans you have installed, etc... So even is another user has a 1700+, he may be seeing lower or higher temps. You really shouldn't compare the temps you're getting to what he's getting as your systems aren't identical and your environments aren't identical.

If your system is running well and not locking up and freezing all the time, leave it alone.

if you are going to the trouble, why wouldnt you spend that little bit more and get the best thermal grease you can? if you regret it later, youll only have to go through the whole cleaning, application and "burn-in" procedure again
