Yay! I finally got round to the whole dual boot sort of thing and it working quite well :) I've installed Windows98 and everything installed okay except my modem.

For some reason Windows98 just never scans for it properly (or so it seems). Acording to windows xp information my modem is using Com3 where as windows 98 only scans Com1&2.

I've tried getting a new driver for the modem but i can't find it anywhere and i can't find any proper details on it. The name is:

Softk56 Data Fax Voice Speakerphone CARP
manufactured by Cxt.

Any ideas? :/

Anyone? :( I can't find any proper name of my modem but i got this from the Conexant website:

Company Name: Conexant
Device Name: HSF Churchill Data/Fax

But it still doesn't help and i can't find the drivers anywhere :(

Go to Reboot's site, you will probably have to use the generic drivers

Thanks, that's 1/2 the battle won at least.

But i'm still getting the same problem, Win98 won't see past Com1 and Com2 even though XP says my modem is intalled in Com3. What should i do?! :(

Btw, my modem is working fine under XP, i can surf the net, ect :)

[edit]
Just to add a few final twists, WindowsXP under the device manager > Ports, it only mentions COM1 and COM2, and if i try to install The modem with the files from reboots website it says something in my Windows98 setup isn't functioning properly :/

reboot

You can't install a driver for hardware that's not there.
You need windows to recognize it first.
Don't try and force the install (which is what you're doing, if it asks you what port you want).
Run the Add Hardware wizard, and if it doesn't show anything, then post back.

what way does the modem connect to your computer??? is com 3 a virual or physical com port? if it's a physical com port you might want to try and connect teh modem to antother com port i. e. 1 or 2

The hardware wizard finds a PCI Communication Device, but it's not the modem it would seem. Infact, i don't know what it is as i have everything installed except the modem.

Com3 seems to be virtual if you ask me, as WinXp reports only Com1 and Com2, same for 98. In fact, i'm just totally lost!

From WindowsXP (which is working properly)

Perhaps i should mention that i'm using Windows98 first edition not Windows98SE

Can anyone help?
I've got some more info if it helps:

COM3 is a virtual port created by my modem. Windows98 does find a PCI Communication device but never gets it to work properly. I've used the Windows98 drivers i got with my computer and then in the device listed i get:

HSFMODEM >PCI Modem Enumerator
Which says it isn't working correctly

When using one of the modem install files i get an error with
MCF42.dll (think that was the name) and claims something isn't working correctly.

Well, if all else fails i'm off to get an external modem :D

reboot

I think you have the wrong driver for your modem.
The PCI comm device IS your modem, and you have an HCF modem, which requires a "double" install. The first is for the Enumerator, and the second is for the modem itself.
Yes, it will take a virtual com port, it's a winmodem, and that's just the way they work.
You could be having a problem because you have no more IRQ's available.
Boot to safe mode.
Go into device mangler, remove all com ports, modems, and the enumerator.
Go into BIOS setup.
Disable com 1 and 2.
Set PnP OS Installed to NO.
Set Reset configuration data to YES.
Restart, let things install.

Well, most of my information came from the LISTMDM tool, which turned up this:

=====================================================================
= SYSTEM INFORMATION =
=====================================================================
Date : 3/20/2003
ListMdm Ver : 1.6
Windows OS : Microsoft Windows XP
Build Number : 2600

NUMBER OF MODEMS FOUND = 1

MODEM #1:

When i try to run this under Win98 and when i try to use one of the installer scripts i get this error which seems to be the root of all evil! ;)

The listmdm.exe file is linked to the missing export MCF42.DLL:6569 but i'm not sure what that means. Is my Win98 setup corrupt?

reboot

It sounds that way...something isn't quite right.

Haha, i may have some ueful information this time!
Tried again and the error in the device list in relation to:
"PCI Modem Enumerator" is:

"The NTKERN.VXD, CONFIG.VXD device loader(s) for this device could not load the device driver (Code 2)." so from that i gather my modem just ain't meant to work with Win98FE (first edition).

Thanks for everyones help though :)

reboot

Wrong. It will work. Now you need to get the right files installed on the computer. Run SFC, and get those two files into c:\windows\system and try it again.
