Since my hard drive failed I`ve been trying to reinstall win98se on the new HD, I`ve Fdisked it and formatted it, However, Just after scandisk finishes checking the drive (with no errors) and While the first Setup screen appears I get "SUWIN CAUSED AN ILLEGAL INSTRUCTION IN MODULE USER.EXE AT 0018:0184 BAD FAULT IN MSDOS EXTENDER" It does this with Win95 as well.
Any Ideas?

Try running the manufacturer's HDD diagnostic on the drive.

If you have two sticks of Ram, then try them one at a time.
If you only have one stick of Ram, then try a new stick.

Get the free Doc Memory tester and follow instructions. I'm assuming you're still using the RAM that once worked on same system.

Hi praxis,
While this usually applies to older motherboards, it can affect some newer ones as well: Try turning off the BIOS virus protection, as Win 95 and Win 98 had troubles loading with the virus protection turned on in most mobos.
