Processor Upgrade... Possible/worth while?

I have an older IBM PC300GL which I have been playing with recently by upgrading RAM and the HD. I have learned quite a bit from these forums and am enjoying learning and upgrading the system. I was looking at prices of some older processors and they are very cheap now. I was thinking maybe an upgrade to a P2/3 500-800MHZ or somewhere around there if my MB supports it.

I currently have a celeron 366. Would it be possible to do this? How difficult is it to do? How do I know what type of processor to get (slot 1) etc.

I don't have the MB manual but I'm sure I can find the info somewhere on the web. Any suggestions?

This upgrade isn't as much for performance as it is for my personal learning and experience.

Do you feel that it's running slow?

There are lessons and a lot of imformation on this site on how to change your CPU...etc...

You should goto Intel site, because it is probably an Intel motherboard, and check what CPU's are available for that motherboard.

Guessing since you have a Celeron in there already, it will probably only take other Celerons, maybe up to 500mhz I'm guessing.

Download Belarc Advisor or some other prog that gets your motherboard info and system info and head to Intel's site.

Nope.
AFAIK, you're limited to a CPU that runs at a 66mhz bus speed.
You've got to find out if you can change the multiplier as well.
The fastest you can use would probably be the Celerons with a 66mhz bus, and I think that 733 is a 100mhz cpu.

I think that Celeron you pointed to on ebay has a 66MHZ fsb, but even so you could not use it.
It is an FCPGA (Flip Chip Plastic Grid Array), the CPU with the little pins on the bottom.
Your mobo's Celeron if for Slot 1, totally different connection type. :D

Ah yes! I hadn't even considered that bit.
It's also possible that the multiplier on that board will NOT go high enough. Anyhow, the bottom line is, no, you cannot use that CPU on that board. At most, you could purchase a slotket and the CPU and see what you can get out of it, but for the price, I'd save money and purchase something that's genuinely upgradeable.
