I am on the phone right now with a friend who is having trouble installing windows 98. It installs halfway and reboots, but he gets the message "Start with CDROM support. With out CDROM support", etc. Then it goes to the A prompt. I told him to take out the boot disk and reboot, but for some reason the same thing happens.

I don't understand why he would get this without the boot disk in the machine. He says it happened before but his cousin typed in some stuff and the installation continued on.

If anyone could help that would be great. TIA

Ok, well I had him type in win and that seemed to do it.. I'm guessing this had something to do with it being a compaq.

I assume that he fdisked to create a FAT32 partition and formatted the volume. Does his boot disk have a file on it called OAKCD.exe or something to that effect? Sounds to me the boot disk isn't loading CD-Rom support.
