I did a format and re-load of a hard drive for a friend. They had Windows ME on it and were having all kinds of lock-up problems. They said they wanted Win98SE on it, so that's what I did. Seems to be working OK, except one problem. When they are on line they can not access any websites that require passwords. IE: Hotmail, eBay, etc. They can get to the site, but can't log on.
They get their regular email just fine.

Happened to me something similar with IE 6 and XP Pro. Strangely, it happened only with a forum site. I have to use Mozilla to access that site well.

Update the java machine. http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
