Having a problem with Direct x, i have installed Dx 9 on to my PC and was working great for weeks then my games started to freeze so i reformated and reinstall every thing on my PC. All my drivers are the latest i can get and when i go in to Dx Diagnostic and check on the display tab to test my Direct 3D, I can run the test for the Dx 8 and Dx 9 interfaces but when I run the Dx 7 interface the Dx logo cube does not spin and the PC freezes and i have to turn it off, can anyone offer any help thank you

Sorry you had to wait so long for a reply, I've been busier than usual lately.

In the "hair-of-the-dog-that-bit-you" category, you could try downloading DirectX 9.0a and hope that whatever bug fixes they've added in the "a" revision will help.

I'd also suspect that the Ati Rage drivers might not be getting along all that well with MS's latest DX. For possibly more recent than your average ATi.com driver, you could head over to http://www.rage3d.com and try their Rage128 driver links (on the top right of the homepage). They have some beta "Catalyst" drivers you could try.

Another thing: search around on the ATi site or the Rage3d site for the "thorough" ATI driver removal procedure. All sorts of mayhem can go on if portions of a previous ATi driver are still hanging about when the new kid comes to town. This can even be something as odd as having two Ati MultiMedia Centers by accident, or by keeping an older "MMC" when going to a new Ati driver. Some Ati users recommend uninstalling everything Ati before trying a new driver, then if all is OK: trying that version's edition of the MultiMedia Center.

Best of Luck

Good luck, John

. . . and, as it turns out, there's another current Ati thread on the forums this week, and pointd has posted that "thorough" Ati driver removal procedure that I spoke of. It's this thread http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=60186
and pointd's reply is about the second or third one with all the details [thanks, pointd :) ]
