When i installed the hercules radeon 9500 pro on my w98 :D...there was 1 thing it didnt want to install, although it worked...

ok, going on was wrong , but i had no os here at home...now i got w2000 from a friend ...

so the problem is my video...it is laggy-like in games...and in windows i get some weird frequent wave from top to bottom...
:( it's a new videocard 8x agp ....my mainboard is an abit kt7a with an amd 1.100 athlon processor with 448 sdram audigy 1 soundcard ......

but maybe i better install w2000 ...the driver that was with the card was only made for wme/2000 and xp ..?!

Ati drivers are fairly particular about how they install, and what version works best.

I'd uninstall everything ATi (both driver and MultiMedia Center, if you installed it). . . and try the reference drivers at http://mirror.ati.com/support/drivers/powered.html for Windows 98. (or try the others if you've already moved to Win2000). Try to use the same version of the MultiMedia Center as your drivers.

If you want to try beta drivers, http://www.rage3d.com has links.
Best of luck
. . . Gary

[p.s. another possibility - the KT133a chipset on that older board might not be getting along all that well with your cutting-edge card. That was the chipset with the PCI/IDE timing issues. You could try updating the bios of the Kt7a to see if it helps (shouldn't hurt). It's up to revision A9. Over at http://www.abit-usa.com/products/mb/kt7a/biosdrive.php ]

What follows below are some instructions on how to fully remove the drivers for ATI cards. I think I found it some time ago in these forums and it is supposedly the procedure the techs at ATI use.

-click Start, Run, type msconfig and click OK. If you already use selective startup make a note of those that are disabled. Place a check in Selective startup, and uncheck load startup group items
-uncheck process autoexec.bat>uncheck process config.sys ( if available)
-click OK and reboot
-remove the current ATI multimedia center and/or DVD player using add/remove programs in the control panel
-select NO when prompted to reboot. Then remove the ATI Display Driver. DO NOT REBOOT
-double click on My comp. on your desk top. ..double click on the C drive>double click on program files
-delete the ATI multimedia folder>DO NOT REBOOT
-go to Start>Run>type regedit>click OK>click on registry on the menu bar
-export the registry to the desktop
-click on the plus sign beside Hkey local machine>click on the + sign besides software
-delete the ATI folders
-click onthe + sign beside the Hkey current user> click on the + sign beside software
-delete any ATI folders
-exit registry

Reboot to Safe Mode

to do this you can hold down CTRL or hit F8 to bring up the MS startup menu
-select #3 to boot to safe mode

-open the Control panel and double click on System
-first select Performance and the Graphics button to ensure that the performance slider is set to full-if not, then change it but do not restart

-then select the Device Manager Tab and click on the + sign next to the display adapters.
-remove ALL VIDEO CARDS LISTED UNDER THE DISPLAY ADAPTER HEADING.
-remove all monitors as well.

-also click on the + sign beside the Sound Video and Games and remove anything that says ATI

-reboot to Normal Mode. Windows will detect new hardware
-cancel this and select No if prompted to reboot.

-open Device Manager.
-double click on the video card listed here and select the Driver Tab
-select Update Driver and the Display A List.
-Select Show All Hardware and then Standard Display Type VGA
-Apply the changes and reboot.

-install the new display drivers by double clicking on the driver download or by running the ATI installation CD.
-reboot

-click Start, Run, type msconfig and click OK
-reset your startup options as noted at the beginning, click OK and reboot
-test the system.
