In My Computer, if I left/right click the floppy icon the blue screen fatal exception comes on. Thus I can't access a needed floppy. However it boots with a Win98 boot disk ok. So am assuming drive itself working. Also when I right click a document and select send to floppy it crashes. In device manager the floppy controller is listed but under disk drives, only the hd (Maxtor) is listed. The other pc's have the hd and floppy listed. How do I get it back?

Just for kicks, try booting without it in the boot list in the BIOS.

Hi SARGE,

Have you tried swapping in another floppy drive?

What about changing the floppy cable?

Correct floppy shown in the BIOS?

Funny that it's not showing up in Device Manager.

This is on a build I've had a few weeks. Don't ever remembering using the floppy except as boot to install Win98se. In device manager under Performance tab, it says "drive A using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system". Acts like a I need a driver for a floppy which I've never ever used. It was an OEM Panasonic from newegg and of course the manuf has no such thing as floppy driver.
If works using a boot disk so am I correct in assuming the drive itself and ribbon are ok?

ms-dos compatability mode generally means it's using real mode drivers.
The vurtual driver may be corrupted.
it's in system\iosubsys\hsflop.pdr

you might want to extract a fresh copy from the cab file ( Win98_Cab46.cab in win98 FE)

you might want to go into device manager
and delete the floppy drive and the floppy controller and let windows refind & reinstall them.

not much

good luck

I did all the above and swapped out floppy and ribbon - same thing happens.

Was the audio driver for onboard sound. Removed it from device manager, rebooted and floppy again ok. Many thanks to glc, who sent me to Intel's site for updated driver; all is well. :)

Interesting Sarge.

Have you or glc got any links explaining this problem?

Nope - I was suggesting updated drivers on general principle.
