I need some advice. I am right in the middle of a class in C++. Last term I took a class on "intro" to programming using GBASIC. The next term I would be going further into C++. The next class is not "required" for my major (IT), so I was thinking of sitting this one out and doing some self study on Java.

What would be a good book to use to start out with? Also, I would like to learn some other languages too if I can stay diciplined to study this on my own. A class situation helps to keep focused, but I want to save a couple of bucks and see how I can do "on my own". Of course, I really won't be on my own because I have great support here ;)

Sun's own tutorial is pretty good for learning Java.

Thanks for the link! I have bookmarked it and will check it out.
I had a class tonight and the professor kept me after to talk to me about the next class. He had some good points. I told him that when this class is finished I would know enough about C++ to be dangerous. If I take the next class and stick with it I will hopefully know enough to do something with it. I will try to learn some other stuff like Java in my "spare" time or when that class is offered. In fact, both C++ classes are prerequisites to taking Java at the college where I am enrolled.
