Two drives on one cable?

Does anyone know if i can have two harddrives on one ide cable???? I have heard that it slows the drives down considerbly but it would only be a short term thing. Or would it be easier to take off my cd rom and use that cable on the harddrive i only want to back things up for when i get a new 40GB drive!

The drive is a 2.67GB and at the moment i have a 6.4GB drive that is rapidly running out of space!

I only have 2 IDE sockets on my motherboard so i dnt know what to do!

2 drives on 1 cable is no problem, it's done all the time. You can slave the extra hard drive to either the primary hard drive or the CD drive.

I agree with glc. Probably what you've heard about the "slowdown" is with older drives. It used to be that if one slower drive and one faster drive were on the same cable, they would both run at the speed of the slower drive. That doesn't seem to be the case anymore though, as both drives will run at their own max speed independently.

In normal usage, you won't notice a thing.
