France joins US and UK

France has officially joined the coalition of the willing and has offered the services of their special operations forces to rid Iraq of Saddam's government.

In related news, France suffered its first casualty of war when they tried to jump on our bandwagon and broke their ankle.

At this point WE don't want france to help.

I agree...I think America should take a "Forgiven but never forgotten" stance with France. Just let us finish our job and things can get back to normal...

Well let's hope the Bush Administration is strong willed enough to deny, France, Russia and China any part of the rebuilding. Also that they keep UN involvement to the one level that it succeeds at, humanitarian levels.

The UN is so corrupt that if given any major role, Iraq will have another dictator with in a year or so. Surprizingly, the BBC has come out strongly in that regard. While PM Blair and his government want UN involvement on more than the Humanitarian level. It would be interesting to see a poll that gives us an indication of where the average Brit stands on this issue.

The guest being intereviewed at the BBC said, "How bloody reliable is an organization that would put a country like Syria at the head of the Human Rights Commission."

So it would seem that UN involvement is going to be a very hot issue with the people as well as the governments.

The physical fighting may be nearly over, but the war of words and Politics is just getting started.

If the Coalition is wise, they should just tell France to get lost.

They were, but since the discovery of the chem weapons, and the fact that we have already done all the grunt work, they want to come in and get in on the victory party if you know what I mean...

Its almost IDENTICAL to what happend in the revolutionary war...Actually I only know this cause of "The Patriot" with Mel Gibson...Spend the whole war doing nothing, and then when we got the win in the pocket....they show up, fire a guns, and they think they saved the day...Oh those funny little french people...:D

Actually the French are just trying to position themselves to help out in the reconstruction of Iraq ... er or should I say 'help themselves to Iraq'.

If your history comes from "The Patriot", you'll find yourself disappointed; the movie was incredibly inaccurate, historically. The French were critical players because it put the war at a stalemate -- neither side could have decisive victory. The colonists could not capture the cities held by the British, and the British couldn't hold anything but their few cities. It ended as a war of attrition. The British General Cornwallis was an excellent example -- he won every battle but his troops became so demoralized he lost the war.

Also, the French haven't joined the coalition, unless it was the quietest joining in history; none of the major news sites say anything about it, and there was a CNN article dated yesterday talking about France's opposition.

Back in the Revolutionary War days a French General asked an English General why they wear red coats, after all,they make a great target. The English General said in case we get shot the blood won't show and panic our troops. This explains why the French wear brown trousers.

All three major opponents to the conflict, France, Germany, and Russia and to an unknown degree China (for some reason I am more willing to understand China's opposition) were and still are wondering if they will get paid for all the material supplied to Iraq that fell outside of the sanctions against Iraq. These UN members have hard REASONS for their opposition. Very little can be learned about the ocean by observing just it's surface.

France and Russia are also concerned about their pre-war oil exploration contracts with Iraq being honoured. If they are not, they stand to lose a huge bundle.

Hence the underlying reason for the recent French, Russian, German "summit" - to safeguard French and Russian business interests.

Those people who thought Russia and France were opposing miltary action on purely moral, legal, and altruistic grounds, need to take their rose-tinted specs off.

I haven't heard anything about France condoning the war or offering to send troops. France, Russia, and Germany have just softened their position on UN (i.e. French and Russian) involvement in post-war Iraq.

Newme if you have been following all of these threads re the war, you will have seen where I have mentioned more than once that only those countries that supported the Liberation of Iraq should be permitted to have any say in Iraq's rebuilding and that includes Canada.

Canada could have made a very, very important contribution to this war. Our Forces are higly trained in Peace Keelping. Our expertise could have provided the forces necessary to maintain civil control until Civil Systems were in place. That would have prevented a lot of the looting and other crimes that have been taking place.

But the Liberal government decided to support the totally ineffective UN instead of her friends, Allies and trading partners. Well we will pay a price for this stupidity and we deserve it.
