What action do you think the UN should take against nations that supported the sanctions on Iraq and all the while kept supplying aid with defensive material such as night vision from Russia, centrifuges capable of refining weapons grade fissionable material from France and Germany. These are members with Veto power? Is there any legitimacy to the UN if no action is taken? Does anyone doubt their complicity?

The UN was specifically designed such that the founding 5 members are above the laws of the UN. The UN has been a joke for that very reason, from day 1. It claims the authority to create international law yet doesn't bind its senior members to obey those same laws.

Personally, I think there's plenty of examples of each of the 5 members breaking UN rules. The UN has always been a joke, they have no idea what their role is supposed to be (they try to be peacekeepers, arbiters, humanitarian aid).

The UN is a great idea, but will never work until all nations, including the UN's founders, agree to be bound by all of its laws, in much the same way the US had problems, and a civil war, before all states would obey the federal laws and surrender enough power to allow the federal government to form a cohesive whole.
