Apps are taking longer to load.

People,
Just recently I am finding my apps, especially Microsoft apps are giving me a 3 or less second delay before loading. What use to happen instantaniously now has about a 3 second delay. For instance I am finding double clicking on *.doc files on the HDD are taking longer to load; most being about 97k and less. Also, I am finding the same delay on my IE.

Now I normally get these kind of complaints from endusers but I feed them back some BS and they take it and the case is closed; but when you are the person experiencing it you get concerned. My technical knowledge is pretty good but something like this; well let's be honest, I am not sure where to start. I have been letting MS load their latest patches and I have not been keeping a record on them. Nothing has been loaded recently; and if you really desire a list of my apps I can do a screen shot.

Any suggestions on this?

Try a disk cleanup. Clear out your temp files, temporary internet files and cookies.

and after you've done what force_flow has suggested, it may be time to defrag and maybe even a scandisk... since you have a WD drive, try their "data lifeguard" to rule out a nutty drive..

Before your posts but after mine I did the disk cleanup and defrag and that made a significant difference. But I have a question; unlike Win98 and other OS's I did not see scandisk as one of my choices on my XP Pro box. Is it still an option on this OS or is it now called something else?

MS decided to revert back to the chkdisk name, instead of scandisk. To run you need to restart the computer.

I'm sure I need to do a little more than that. Restart the computer, okay then what do I need to do before or after that?

In the properties of C:\ , under the tools tab it will have error checking, when you select it will ask, to fix errors, and check for bad sectors. Then it will tell you you need to restart your computer.

In the help - chkdisk it gives a list of different switches you can use with the command

Something else I thought of: are you running KaZaa? Have you check for spyware/adware? Try running spybot and adaware. ;)

I run chkdsk from the command prompt. The /f switch fixes file system errors and the /r switch does that and does a surface scan.
