Hey all,

Here is my problem. I have a Speedstream switching hub/firewall/router thingy I use to network my systems together and also give them all internet connectivity. Everyone once in a while, my main computer seems to not be able to connect to the internet. I would see internet explorer status bar saying "Opening page <website here>" forever or if I hit the stop button and then refresh it would say "Website found, waiting for reply" forever, and never connect. The problem goes away if I unplug my router for a few moments then plug it back in, but then it comes back later on. I can also get the problem to go away by restarting my computer. Now, I use both Opera 7.x and IE 6.x and the problem effects both browsers.

The problem is not really global, everything else that is not an internet browser (IRC, AIM, SmartFTP, ect..) can connect to the internet just fine. So I'm gonna leave it at that, please feel free to push more specific questions my way.

Thanks.

Hi,

What type of router do you have? Have you tried updating the firmware? Has this always been problem, or has it just started happening recently? Have you tried clearing your cookies/temporary files? HTH

I get that sometimes, and I am running a LINKSYS DSL/CABLE router. Rebooting the router and simply replugging the connections with a system reboot solves the problem, and it doesn't happen often, just once in a while.

I have heard about this problem in the past, and I think it wasn't a router problem, but just a bad NIC.

hmm... it might just be the NIC, the problem has been happening for a while, since forever, it may be the NIC, I could just swap it with my other 3com but this one is wired to a LED to the front of my case :-(

I have a Siemens SpeedStream 2604. In the past, I have tried updating the frimware but it wouldn't update so...

I get that every now and then, running 5 systems on an SMC router. It always turns out to be a flaky NIC.

When I get this on just 1 pc but all others are doing ok, this is what I do:

Start, Run, type winipcfg. Select "release all", then reboot.

If all pcs are experiencing the same problem, or a drastic slowdown, then I'd reboot your DSL modem, some models perform error correction and as errors build up they periodically need to be cleared out.

Hi Sarge,

This question just comes out of curiousity. When you release the IP information, can you not just renew it in windows (without having to reboot)? Or does this not work in your case? TIA.

Never tried it that way, but who knows?
