I'm trying to hook up my friends home network but for some reason only one computer can hook up to the internet at a time. One computer has Windows 98 and the other has XP w/SP1. The Win98 PC has a LAN card installed and the XP has onboard LAN and they both connect through a D-Link "Switch" box that also connects to a Toshiba cable modem. All cables are CAT5.

I just dont get it. Obviously both computers are hooked up right, but only one can be on the internet. If it helps, I couldnt get the computers to see each other's files. Thanks in advanced for your responses guys.

I think I have seen this before..Dont you have to set it up using PPoPE or something like that? Do you have the instructions that came with the router...

Try going to the website of the router maker and get the instruction to do it...

I hope it helps:)

Thanks avx487...I cant beleive I didnt even think of going to the product's website. The Tech Support Q&A says that I need a router so I can share IP adresses. I was told something different form a Best Buy employee. That explains everything.

If you don't have a router, you'll have to purchase another IP from your ISP for the second computer. Some ISP's will give you one, other's charge as much as $9.95/month for it.
Phone the ISP and ask, before you go get a router, although with a router you get all the security built in, and it's a better way to go.

p.s. NEVER trust the word of a commissioned salesperson, especially from a store that sells refridgerators and washing machines.
