Help! Can't get broadband to work after disconnecting router

This is with my uncle's computer. He has a Linksys wireless router, but he doesn't need it anymore. When I unhooked it and hooked the computer directly to the modem, the internet didn't work anymore... I've tried reinstalling the nic card and redoing the network connection wizard, but it still didn't work. When I hook the router back up, the internet works again.

Another thing, when the router is hooked up and i go into Network Connections in Control panel, there is a icon for Internet Gateway and LAN/High Speed Internet. When I go look without the router, there is only the LAN/High Speed Internet icon. What is going on? I have a router on my two computers, but only have the LAN/High Speed Internet icon and it works fine..

did you try to unhook the power to the modem for a couple of minutes and plugging back in and see if that works

Power the modem and computer down for 15 minutes, power the modem back up, then restart the computer.

What modem does he have?

The type of modem he has may needa pppoE connection software, unless you are maybe using win XP with the native pppoE client. But you may need to configure the connection, because the router was probably suppling it before you disconnected it.

(keep in mind, i am looking at this from a DSL point of view.

It is a cable modem from the cable company. I have tried turing of fthe computer and maodem, waiting, then turning it back on, but it didn't work. His OS is windows XP. When I was messing with it before without the router, I clicked on the LAN connection and tried to repair it, but it said that it couldn't renew the IP address... When the router was hooked up, I could repair it fine.

how about unplugging the modem intstead of powering down?

remove the power cord from the modem for about 30sec to 1min. it should do the trick (took me 1h to realize how to get my connection back :mad: )

yes on cable connection you would need to unplug the power to the modem.

Here is the way my cable connection at home works with comcast.

connect PC 1 up to my modem. works file.
connect a router to my modem I have to unplug my cable modem for about 5-10 minutes so that it forgets the Mac address that is on my NIC in my PC.
if I want to go back to modem to PC connection I have to unplug the modem again 5-10 minutes so that it forgets the Mac address on my router.

Cable modems generally use the modems s/n and Mac address and it reads the Mac on the NIC it is connected too. hints if that Mac address changes the Modem needs to be unpluged so that it forgets the mac address then it can accept a new one.
