DSL only getting 34KB/s

Im trying to accept a rather large file from a buddy of mine on AIM, and he has Cable, I have DSL, and Im only getting 34KB/s for a DL speed...Whats causing it to go slow???

Its a steady 34KB/s its like rock solid on that number...Im on Bellsouth DSL he has AT&T Cable...Would it make any differnce just cause I have me and my brother sharing a connection through a Belkin Router?

Most likely he has a 256 kilobit upload cap.... that would equate to about 32 kilobytes per second which would be the max he could upload to you.

The only way to get a faster upload speed would be for him to upgrade his internet service, which would cost more money.

I don't know how close together you live, but couldn't he give you a cd?

If that isn't feasible, I'd recomend using a program like WinRAR to split the file into more manageable chunks for transmission.

Hal beat me to it, but that is correct, most cable companies in the southeast limit to about 30 KB/sec upload cap.

You would be about the same speed if you where uploading to him, your ADSL would have a simliar cap.

Thats is lame on soo many lvls..why would they even put a cap...they think we might be getting what we pay for or something?????

There are many types of connections

I know that your adsl provider is 1472 down by 256 up.
Asymmetric digital subscriber line. In short, download speeds are faster then your uploads.

Most home users want to be able to download files and webpages fast and fewer are uploading files.
To please the most ppl it makes sense that they make the download faster then the upload.

Keep in mind, it is not designed for running servers or file sharing, although that is possible.

Most companies look at the cost they are charged for bandwidth and they pass the cost on to the end user.

If you think you are getting a bad deal on 1472 down by 256 for about 50 dollars a month, check into and see what 1472 by 1472 would cost you.

there are other verisons of DSL, some companies provide 256/256 for 50 dollars a month. image if you had that.

Some are 384/384, I have seen 756 by 256.

there are alot of other DSL speeds, those are just some of the main ones.

So before you think you are getting the short end of the stick

keep in mind, there is not speed Guarantee with most companies,
I beleive per FCC rules, it is boardband at 256/256. If you get that, then you are boardband.

I am not on DSL at home I am on cable and my speeds run about
2100 down by 256
I have the same cap as you and I have uploaded many GB of files. Yes it takes time, but unless you are willing to pay for the higher bandwidth, you have to deal with current caps.

also, most providers won't increase to home users, they would rather raise the caps of business customers that are willing to pay for the bandwidth, to get thoses caps if you are willing to spend the money in most cases you would need to have a business phone with cost about double a month for service and a DSL business account with can run a few hundred dollars amonth, but no matter your connection, you are always going to have max up and downs that can not exceed the other end of the connection.

Myself, I would rather have the high speed down, then high speed up.

I have a pretty decent package at 1536 down, 1024 up.... people can download from me at roughly 100k per sec.

The reason we have upload caps on residential service here is to prevent you from running servers. If you want to run a server, you need to upgrade to a commercial account.
