You can probably find it in one of the text files that's in your windows (winnt) folder, you will have to do some searching though. I cant remember win2k, but for winXP there is a text file in the windows folder named 'iis6' and it has the computer name in there, however it's a good size file and will take some hunting, inside of that file on XP it will say something like this somewhere in there

[6/10/2002 0:57:45] OC_COMPLETE_INSTALLATION:m_csMachineName=\\

right after that will be the name of the computer for which that hard drive belongs. 2k and XP are alot alike but I dont know if file name(s) will be the same, but it will be a notepad file in your windows (winnt) folder, and when you open it, it will look like some kind of log or event report. good luck, maybe someone else around here can help you pin point what your looking for a little better.

Get into Device Manager on that hard drive, the name will be at the top of the list.
As ssahl says, welcome to pcmech!

If I read his question right though, he has the hard drive hooked up to another computer, so if he goes to the device manager it will only tell him the name of the computer he's booting from.
rostb, if you could let us know for sure just what name your wanting, (ie the hard drive or the computer) and also if infact you have taken the drive out of the original computer.

He has it as a slave with it's own OS wouldn't it behave similarly to a multi-boot?

Not unless he has it setup that way, I didnt think he did as if he was booting from that win2k there would be many ways to see the name of the computer. If he just hooked it up to his laptop then it would look like another hard drive only it would have all the windows files on it. Bill, it's real nice to post your outcome of what you posted your thread about, weather you found it or not, or the hard drive blew up or whatever, not only does it help us out when trying to help you out, but could also maybe help others out in the future who may have the same problem, or want to know the same thing.
