I've gotten this error about 5 times using XP Home, and now, currently, XP Pro. The error appears during the loading session of XP, with a title of "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME".
I couldn't figure out, so my solution has always been to reformat. I can't this time though, my back-ups are out of date, so I have vital information I can't lose. I've tried slaving my main drive to other drives to salvage the info, but to no avail.
I then decided to call in to a professional repair shop, they said they could fix it - for $50. Just the thing is, I'm pretty much flat broke, with more bills to pay. And I need to get my computer back online to generate a bit of extra cash. So, if it can be fixed, my question is: how? I would be grateful for your response.
